We love a good rye whiskey here at Central Waters, and we were pretty excited to get these barrels a couple years back. We took the powerhouse base beer blend from our anniversary series and aged it in Buffalo Trace rye whiskey barrels for 35 months. The subtleness of these barrels is spectacular as Buffalo Trace is rumored to use less rye in their mash than other rye whiskeys on the market - we knew right away which beer to put in them! The slight sweetness of the stout base combined with the subtle spiciness of rye whiskey made a beer worthy of this series.

pours dark brown with a light brown smooth head with bubbles
awesome bourbon and wood notes on a solid roasted malted base, mellow and velvety, not pastry stoutish sweet, more like sweet and salty licorice with coconut and chocolate, close to perfect bourbon ba imp stout aroma and the alc is kept hidden, no stingy nose here. the many months on wood has rounded it and mixed up everything well, but have not added weird notes or mouldy rustic notes or the like. really successful clean barrelling.
flavor is roasted malts, bourbon notes, a lot of wood notes, so much that the wood notes are too big compared to the bourbon notes and roasted malty nots. imagine beer filtered trough sawdust. still good but pretty damn woody. cedar woody notes, roasted malty notes and bourbon notes near perfect, nearly no burnt caramel or other off flavors. They clearly should not have aged it any longer than this - but at 35 months it is insane how balanced the end result turned out to be.
easy drinking for it's kind and dangerously easy drinking at that. very subtle wild'ish notes probably from barrelling, those subtle notes are all over the place like in a good belgian quad - but they are faint. This, hower, adds complexity and a lot to discover as you work your way through your bottle. compared to the heavy aroma and flavor, the texture feels a bit thin.

Bomber from the brewery, and thanks to Kat, Heidi, and Brad for the assist. 8/28/24. Black, large brown head if you pour vigorously. Otherwise poor retention. Aroma of roast, chocolate brownies, oak, whiskey, booze. Taste is roast, vanilla, cherry, smoke, oak, bourbon. Strong booze. Like the charred oak notes. Nice.
