This assertive ale lies somewhere between a barleywine and a double IPA. A rich maltiness with notes of dark sugar and raisins play against a bracing bitterness and an aggressively hoppy finish.

Barcade, Philadelphia 10oz ($6): Pours a dark brown color with a brownish head. Aroma is somewhat standard for a black IPA: lots of piny hops with a roasted malt backbone. While drinking this beer, it doesn’t come off as really massive. The two aspects of the beer sort of balance each other out. Mouth feel is kind of thick and really sticks to your mouth. Quite good, and it has the word jawn in it, which is Philadelphian for everything.
