Hop Strike! is a dry-hopped Black Rye-IPA built from the ground up at Tommyknocker Brewery. This beer is characterized by an intermingling of spicy citrus hops and chocolate malt creating an interesting complexity and great first impression on the nose. Hop Strike’s substantial 95 IBUs are balanced by the chocolate rye resulting in a nice depth of malt character and deep color.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy dark brown color with a small longlasting off-white head. Has a fruity hoppy citrus aroma with hints of licorice. Fruity malty hoppy bitter piney flavor with hints of licorice. Has a fruity malty hoppy bitter finish.

On tap at the Wesley Chapel Brass Tap. It pours up mahogany with some deep ruby hues and a mocha head. It leaves a decent amount of lacing behind on the glass. The modest aroma offers up citrus hops, pine hops and dark roasted malts. The taste enters with a pulse of citrus hop bitterness and to a lesser extent hop flavor. That brief moment of hoppiness is swallowed whole by bitter spicy hops and earthy hops to about midway. It then gets a bit green and herbal with sort of wet hops before a moderate level of very dark roasted malts, a touch of toffee and then burnt malts help take this to the finish. Wow, love this stuff.

Bottle at Butters’ Slutfest: Charred oak and coffee (medium roast) nose. Garnet brown, thin head. Coffee flavor, not strong, not hoppy. Light body, coffee finish. Good beer, IPA fail.

Draught @ White Horse on Parsons Green, 1-3 Parsons Green, London, Greater London England SW6 4UL. [ As Tommyknocker Black Rye IPA ].Clear dark black brown color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, burnt, caramel, choholate, heavy hoppy, grapefruit, orange - citrus. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20100806]

16oz bottle-pours a retaining rich tan head with trailing lace and black color that has some cascading. Aroma is rich dark malt/oat/grain-cocoa/bready overtaken by resin hops. Bottle shared with others. Pours a hazy muddy brown with a light chocolate brown head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma has a light chocolate note as well as earthy malts and grass hops. Flavor began with earthy grass/pine hop that was joined by hay and dark grains with a bit of backing rye and chocolate.

Bottle @ Hotelroom, Denver, Co. Pours black with a cramy light brown head, looks tasty. Nose is citruss and floral hops, backed up with dark chocolate and light caramel notes. Taste is citruss, little grapefruit, herbal hops, but less dominatn that one would think from the aroma. Hops are balanceded with deep roasted and chocolatelike malts. Medium nody, smooth creamy mouthfeel, long balanced finish, high drinkability. Overall a very nice Black IPA.051210

Draft at Micropub, Rockford. Opaque black brown, forsty glass, big roasty beige head. Awkward, as per style. Big and bitter, with a chocolate water body. Bitter, but not really closest resembles an Eastern European Black beer. Nutty with a funky chocolate pungence. Sub par effort but does reinforce the style. Watery. Syrupy. Not World Class.

500ml bottle - dark mahogany pour with a thick, creamy, lasting head - looks pretty damn awesome, really - nose of woody hops, chocolate, smoke, damn leaves - soft carbonation - very creamy in the mouth - quite sweet, actually, especially in the finish - quite a bit of earthy hop flavor, but surprisingly moderate bitterness - rye present, but covered up a bit by a chocolate sweetness - spicy hop finish - lingering smoke character - fairly decent, really.
