Bottle @ J&C, Friday session, 2011. Thanks. Pours dark amber brown with a small creamy off white head. Nose is toffee and hops. Citrus and phat caramel. Flavor is sweet toffee and vaguely burnt with some hops in the end.

Half pint, cask hand pulled at The Queens Head, St. Pancras. Deep, dark ruby body under a tiny layer. Inviting aroma of dark, bitter hops. Red orange, pineapple and grapefruit in a well blended taste character that also features cocoa powder and lighter notes of anise. Resin-like bitterness to the finish. Lovely, a bit heavy to drink, though (London, 19.03.2011).

Cask (hand pump) at the Bree Louise, London. Very dark reddish brown colour, nearly black. Low creamy tan head. Nice aroma of fruity New World hops. Lovely hoppy flavour with fruity and piney notes, on a background of moderately roasted malts, with notes of chocolate and mild coffee.

50cl bottle from the Home Brew Shop, Aldershot. My first encounter with the Black IPA style - and one I think I’m going to like. Pitch black in appearance with a chestnut glow and a thin coating of tan head - looking very porterish; but the aroma is laiden with resinous hops, full of pine trees and pineapples; it’s rather thinly bodied but has richly roasted malts cut through by assertive Cascade hops giveing a grapefruit burst and then a long, dry resinous finish. Very, very, good - but I’d like the finish to last even longer.

Cask at The William Jolle, Northwood Hills, Wetherspoons. A dark brown, almost back coloured pour with a medium beige head. This was surprisingly fresh. Pleasant hoppy, roasty aroma. Tastes hoppy, citrus fruit, malty, slightly bitter. My first beer from Windsor and Eton and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

500ml bottle, thanks to Evin at The Kernel for this bottle, really very much appreciated Evin. Very dark brown black colour with thin lasting beige head. Typical black IPA aroma (funny how even after just half a dozen of theis style you do get a feel for them), i.e. good IPA hop aroma with some roasty malt. Oh yes that is good in the mouth too. Wow an English brewery early in their career doing such an unusual style and doing it damn well. Lovely full mouth feel. Hop has good sherbert and grapefruit. Malts have a little charcoal bonfire flavour. Great hop finish, good balance throughout. Very impressed. Some condensed smoke on the finish. Solid beer and the ABV works well and will work well in the UK market. Classy and impressive.

From cask at Bree Louise. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted malt and fruity hoppy. Bitter, roasted malt, breadish and dark malt. Bitter and subdued fruity, peachy and citrusy. Bitter and dark malty mixed finish.

Cask (Queen’s Arms, Basingstoke) - Dark brown in colour. Roasted and hoppy aroma with caramel and pine featuring. Hoppy and roasted taste with toffee, liquorice and grapefruit detected. Very enjoyable.

Cask-conditioned at the Three Tuns, Bristol 21/12/10. Deep, reddish brown, with a slight tan head. Aroma of berry fruits, chocolate and citrus hops. Sweet, doughy flavour with some roasted malts, more fruit and plenrty of hop character, with some pine in the dry finish. Very good.

Cask at the Jolly Butchers, London on 3rd December 2010. Black with part-lacing offwhite creamy head. Aroma is spicy, fruity and with smoke. The kick in this beer is richly malty with berry fruits and grapefruit hop. There was a subtle but delicious savoury note. The finish is bitter with burnt malts and a touch of smoke. An engaging textured mouthfeel. Superb.
