A classic ruby dark mild, smooth like velvet, sweet and creamy, you’d be fooled into thinking we were talking about a chocolate box selection.

Cask at the Bootlegger - High Wycombe. Pours clear brown with a creamy, tan head. The nose has some toasty brown bread, faint cocoa and toffee. Light sweet flavour with more toast, earth, mild chocolate. Light bodied with fine carboantion; decent condition. Drying in the finish, with further bittersweet cocoa, light toast and roast, leathery berries. Not bad.

Casl at Prince of Wales, Farnborough. 09/09/16. Little aroma to speak off. Hint of malt. Dark chestnut, almost black. Weak head, just circles inside of glass. Sweet but not overly so. Medium bodied, oily mouthfeel. Slightly malty. However it had a really odd finish - leaves a salty taste in the mouth. Average at best.

On the train from Hereford to Inverness, 2 litre PET bottle acquired from the brewery the previous evening, 18/10/13. Mid to light black, good sized light tan head that thins to a covering. Nose is light cocoa, dark fruity tang, treacle toffee. Taste comprises earthy tones, light cocoa, walnuts, dark fruits, toffee. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, mild finish. Decent mild, not at all thin for 3.7% and plenty of flavour.

Bottle from the Tring Brewery. Poured a dark ruby with a medium tan head. Aroma of dark malts, caramel, some nutty overtones. More malts and caramel in the flavour with some brown sugar. Turns a little too bitter at the end, which I didn’t think worked.
