Alaskan Double Black IPA is a combination of beer styles, with a flavor profile most similar to an Imperial IPA and the dark black color and rich flavors usually found in heartier stouts and porters.
The Black IPA, also called "Cascadian Dark Ale" or "American-style India Black Ale," is a relative newcomer to the craft beer world. We may not know what to call it yet, but we do know it’s dark and it’s hoppy and we can’t get enough of it.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of scrizzz. Pours a very dark mahogany with a warm reddish hue and a small beige head. Hard roast and juicy hops in the nose. Medium body, again a solid roastiness, dark fruits and a massive bitterness. Somewhat citric also. The finish clearly has some roasted malty bitterness as well. 221110

Bomber from Nugget Market in West Sacramento, CA. Pours really dark brown with a foamy 2 finger tan head. Dark malt aroma with some floral hop. Full bodied with creamy/foamy carbonation. Flavor is very dark malt, there’s a moderate heat burn, and there is chocolate and a mix of hops. Pretty busy ale. Finishes like a hopped stout, sort of. GFB!

On tap at The Front Door in Boise ID. Black, duh. with a thin dense an head. Subdued hop aroma for an IPA. Rich sweet and it’s of candy licorice and spices. Modest hop flavors would be a generous appraisal. Soft smooth feel and soft carbonation A strange but pleasent black beer.

On tap at TCBF, pours black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and hops. Flavour begins like a porter/stout with a rich roasted malts, and ends with a hop punch like a great IPA. Wonderful one.

Bomber poured into tumbler. The Black IPA style is relatively new, yet here we have a brewery making a double already. Fine by me! Pours almost opaque black with a litte bit of dark reddish-brown tints at the edges of the tumbler and a medium-sized beige head that leaves some creamy spotty lace. Aroma is cat-box, citrusy and floral hops, and sweet chocolate malt. It has the essence of cat-box, but it’s not making me gag like real cat-boxes do. It smells good in fact. I wonder why that is. Taste is sweet and then bitter. Finishes bitter with a touch of sour. Nice roasted malt presence juxtoposes with Pac-NW hops to create a nice beer. Carbonation is medium-high, body is full; creamy mouthfeel. I like it but I don’t love it.

Dark reddish black. Nice hoppy nose, peppery with plenty of grapefruit. Similar flavor hop profile with a solid bitter finish rounded out with hints of chocolate and roast. Nice.
