Alaskan Baltic Porter is a deep, dense beer with an intricate array of aromas and flavors derived from substantial amounts of specialty malts, dark black cherries and whole gourmet vanilla beans. In order for the British to export their dark ales to the northern ports of the Baltic Sea, they were brewed stronger than normal to endure the long voyage. The extra warmth was welcomed in these countries with harsh winters and a taste for the robust, attributes that also fare well in Alaska.

Sample at Daily Growler UA. Black pour with some brown around the edges, and a medium thick frothy tan head that diminishes gradually to a film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoked malt, vanilla, coffee and cherry. Medium to full body with flavors of charred malt, coffee, vanilla and black cherry. The finish is oak, smoke and dark fruit. Pretty good all around.

My first stab at a Baltic porter. Let’s see how it is with Alaskan. A discovery at a nearby craft beer establishment, I am happy to try this bomber. Going into my .47 liter New Belgium globe glass, it arrives a dark, dark amber with a prodigious medium tan top. I smell it from the pour but take a closer pull on it, malt, baked bread, something berry. The money shot, a drink. Hmm, different than I expected, better actually. Cherry maybe, a woodiness, chocolate, whole grain bread, red licorice, completed by a strong bitterness. Pretty good all in all.

Bottle from Albertsons. Pitch black pour, small, tight head. Heady roasty aroma, dark chocolate, smoky. Taste is deep and rich, feel is thick and smooth. Burnt toast bitterness, sticks around for a while. Just enjoyable all the way through.

From a tasting. 2012 bottle.
My portion was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a nice looking mostly dark brown color with a thin layer of white foaminess gracing the top of the beer. Lacing was few and far between.
The smell started off with a big dark fruity mix leading to a slight chocolate and then after I gave it a good warming, light black licorice comes out and allows a decent vanilla.
The taste follows the nose for the most part. Big sticky dark fruity aftertaste leading to the same sort of finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping quality about it. The carbonation seemed really smoothed out as the beer just seemed to roll right on off my tongue appropriately.
Overall, I say this was a nicely aged Baltic Porter. So glad to have tried it before I left Alaska.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, 2012 vintage. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, dark bread, brown sugar, toast, cherry, raisin, vanilla, toffee, oak, clove, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt notes with the cherry/brown sugar/vanilla additions and oak; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, toast, dark bread, roasted malt, light coffee, cherry, raisin, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar, oak, clove, and roasted earthiness. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, dark bread, toast, roasted malt, light coffee, raisin, cherry, toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, oak, clove, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt flavors with the flavor and oak additions; with huge robustness and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy, slick, and moderately silky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an incredible Baltic porter style! All around awesome balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt with flavor additions and oak; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle: Poured a dark thick oil sludge black with a thin light brown head. Aroma is thick dark fruits and malts, already smooth feeling without tasting. Taste is a nice dark fruit with sweet roasted malts, subtle coffee bean. Robust but smooth.

22 oz. bottle, pours near-black / dark amber brown with a small tan head. Aroma contains some semi-sweet dark fruits, a bit of toffee, brown sugar and caramel malts. Flavour is really bold, full of deep dark fruits, toffee, brown sugar, a bit of smokiness and cocoa. Extremely full-bodied and viscous, especially for a porter, with a sticky mouthfeel and moderate sweetness.
