Autumn Brown Ale

Sierra Nevada uses malt within days of roasting at the peak of its flavor to give Tumbler a gracefully smooth malt character. Two-row pale, crystal 40, chocolate and smoked malts give it a malty complexity. Challenger hops in the boil add balancing bitterness, while more Challengers and some Goldings give just enough hop flavor in the finish to balance all that malt.

355 ml bottle, in Nevada City. Reddish brown colour, off-white head. Malty and nutty aroma and flavour, with notes of burnt caramel. Moderate hops in the finish. I’m sorry, but brown ales like this one rarely make me ecstatic. This one is no exception, even though it is made by the capable brewers of Sierra Nevada. Nothing wrong with it, just not my favourite style.

Bottle in pint glass. Signal Variety Plaistow NH. Aroma is strong bread and dough/mild basement smell. Appearance is attractive clear cola color with mild sparkle, finger-width foamy beige head with mild lacing. Taste is sweet malt with hints of fruit and pleasant bitter abrupt, dry finish. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with thin texture and lively carbonation. Overall, a nice brown ale without any surprises or dramatic features. Competent.

At a a tasting, thanks, small stable creamy bubbly head, a bit hazy deep red color, aroma of dark bread with hints of chocolate, flavor of caramel and dark bread with a medium herbal bitterness. Nice and quite drinkable.

Bottle shared at a tasting at Ariel’s place. Amber to brown color with a beige head. Aroma of malt, nuts and a bit of caramel. Sweetish flavor, slightly roasty, nutty, with a bit of caramel, a light chocolate note and a drier finish. Medium-bodied.

Ok I love seasonal beers and it is almost time to switch over to Winter Warmers & Christmas beers so I figured I move fast and have my Tumbler Autumn Brown Ale. This is my first Sierra Nevada in quite a while! Bottle served in a pint glass it pours a clear deep mahoganey brown with a foamy beige head that lasts quite a long time. A nice aroma of toasted malts, some nuttiness, brown sugar and maybe a touch of cacao. Medium bodied with quite a lively carbonation makes it pop in your mouth. The taste is sweet toasted malts, a bit bready with some nuttiness and a mild coffee bean/cacao bitterness in the finish. It is quite a satisfying beer for a not terribly exciting style - good work.

12 oz. bottle purchased at Julio’s Liquors. Deep brown color, slight fading head. Aroma is chocolate, toasted nuts, and a very mild smoke.

The flavor is a mirror of the aroma. The body is really hearty for such a low ABV brew. Drying texture. Easy to drink and I wouldn’t turn this down if offered a bottle.

Rich malt, overt chocolate and slight peat to it. Clear mahogany with off-white head. Smokiness and rich malts. Slight hop flavor of perfume and floral. Moderate high carbonation leads to a spritzy finish.
