Strong, ’edelbier’ version of Augustijn Blond, also tasted as St. Stefanus Grand Cru at the 2012 Horeca Expo in Ghent, but apparently this is the same beer. Very thick and foamy, rocky, sticky, off-white head and deep orangey blonde colour, hazy with a big mass of sparkles pushing through, supporting the head. Aroma of apple peel, bitter honey, quite a lot of iron, old cake, unripe peach, dough, hint of pineapple; taste is fruity, estery, bit yeasty, pineapple, peach and apple returning, honeyish and even slightly sugary sweetishness in the background, strong carbonation with sourish effect, smooth bready malt sweetishness, bit grainy, evolving into a finish which primarily consists of lingering malt sweetness, tingling carbonation, grassy hop bitterishness and the unavoidable ’jenever’-like booziness. Clearly an attempt at rivalling Duvel - need I say more?

Bottle at De Kelk, Brugge, 17/10/14. Lightly hazed golden with a decent off white covering. Nose is malt forward, booze fumeage, spice, sweet, caramel, dark fruit rinds. Taste comprises candied fruit peel, earthy notes, spice, straw, bitter fruits. Medium + body, fine carbonation, lightly warming alcohol in the close. Ok Belgian Strong, drinkable and doesn’t get too sweet or cloying, doesn’t deliver too much when considering the ABV mind!

Overall yeasty and malty , some melted butter , smooth and slick . Some hop dryness and bitterness at the finish. Not much of a head a pale gold body, but lots of lacing .

Donkergeel, helder bier met mooie schuimkraag en gemiddeld koolzuur. Smaak is bitter hoppis en iets zurig, appel. Blijft lang hangen. Smaak heeft veel weg van Duvel.
