(Draught at Delirium Tap Bar, Brussels, 25 Oct 2013) Pale golden colour with frothy, white head. Malty, fruity nose with white bread, tropical fruit, grass and honey. Malty, fruity taste with notes of bready malt, tropical fruit, pineapple, a touch of honey and a balanced grassy bitterness. Almost full body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty, with a slight alcohol glow coming through. Quite nice.

cloudy bright golden colour, medium white head, which collapses promptly; aroma of green apple, yeast, and some maltynes; taste of candy sugar, fruits, hoppy bitterness and significant alcoholic warmth; not bad belgian ale, but very far from the best

Disparate off-white head over clear copper beer. Toasted, ’hot’ malts, yeast - Van Steenberge to the bone. Sweet, yeasty, bit fruity (estery). Again sweet malts to the fore. Medium bodied at least. Looks more than a bit flat, but manages to taste fizzy! Van Steenberge op z’n smalstEarlier Rating: 4/14/2004 Total Score: 2.9Huge, lemon-yellow tinted head, dense; pale golden beer, highly carbonated, hazy at the end. Very dry nose, candi sugar, caramel, caramelsyrup. Liquorice in the haste, tons of it. Very annoying, burnt sugar taste - dry and citrussy acidity on top of the cloying malt/liquorice. Very dry indeed, but well bodied. The palate glides more and more to the citrussy flavour till the end. Burning sensation and alcohol warming. The first taste is terrible. When the dry-citrussy flavours takes over it gets tolerable - no, even better than that. But it's already ruined. It makes me think most of the "Gerulfus Merendree tripel", but with a nasty shot of malt syrup to start.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 7/20/2011. Pours slightly cloudy golden amber color with a nice 2 finger foamy and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big apple, lemon, pear, grape, banana, floral, clove, pepper, honey, candi sugar, bread, light bubblegum, and yeast earthiness. Excellent aromas with great balance, strength, and complexity of fruity/spicy ester notes with moderate malt balance. Taste of big apple, lemon, pear, grape, banana, clove, honey, floral, candi sugar, light bubblegum, bread, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of light fruits, banana, clove, pepper, honey, candi sugar, bread, light bubblegum and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance and complexity of fruity/spicy ester flavors; with a moderate malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a slick and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent Belgian strong pale ale! All around great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy esters with moderate malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.Earlier Rating: St Stefanus Grand Cru version Total Score: 3.9750 ml bottle into chalice, bottled on 8/28/2012. Poured from 330mL bottle. Slightly hazy golden yellow with small white head. Aroma is predominantly pear and yeast with some mild lemon. Some pear on the taste with resin. Quick finish that leaves a bitter slightly metallic aftertaste. A little grass like.

330 ml bottle. Pours a clear gold with big head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of rubber, ginger, toasted malts, and light lemons. Flavors of banana chips, resin, spice, earth, and rubber. Sharp and unique but the rubber notes are a major negative.
