Cask at the lovely Devonshire Arms. Somewhere between darkest brown and black. Opaque with pretty much no head. The aroma is mostly liquorice with a bit of smoke. The bittersweet taste is right in the money: liquorice, raw wood, chocolate, salt. Intense and beautiful.

Cask at The Pembury Tavern. Opaque black color, tiny beige head. Licorice in the nose. Medium-bodied. Sweetish in the front, the licorice all over. Good but one-dimensional.

Cask at the Pembury Tavern - London. Pours oily black with a foamy, khaki head. Lots of dark fruits in the nose, some chocolate, minimal roast. Medium sweet flavor with further dark fruits, grapes, berries, raisins, slight molasses, gooey chocolate. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation; good condition. Nicely balanced finish with more ripe, dark and dried fruits, raisin and berry, some prune, fig, mellow cocoa and roast, slight earthy bitterness. Good stuff overall. Very drinkable.

Cask at the Pembury Tavern, 03/01/15. Black with a moderate tan swirl and edgeing. Nose is dark fruits, charr, raisens, biscuit, spice, chocolate. Taste comprises rich roast, liqourice, tar, big dark fruits and cake mix, molasses, light chocolate notes. Medium + body, slightly viscous but not too cloying, light booze in the close. Decent enough cask impy but surprised its so high up in the list of beers from England, things have moved on for the better!

On cask at Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield - BOOM! This was good. All the qualities of a good Imperial Stout, lots of coffee, liquorice, roasted malts etc on the nose, thick oily body with a silky vanilla ice-cream taste at the back end. Quality.

Cask at the Pembury Tavern on 23rd December 2013. Deep red-black with thin tan head and no lacing. Richly spicy roasty aroma. Aniseed, spice, coffee and Christmas pudding in-mouth, very solid flavours continuing into a roasty, spicy and fruity finish. A curious sweet apple note develops if drunk in larger sips; I was unsure if this note was intentional. Velvet mouthfeel; body suprisingly light for strength. Works well as a Christmas ale although I was advised it is available outside this period.

Cask at St Albans beer festival 2013, Herts. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a thin beige head on top. Roasty, malty, dark fruit aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, dark fruit, some chocolate in there, sweet and rich. Reminded me of a Victorian sweet shop. Very nice indeed.
