Old Sour Cherry Porter was not a beer that was planned, but one that has become a staple at Rivertown. This delicious disaster was born when it became apparent that the original intentions of brewing a Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter became compromised by wild yeasts and bacterias. Instead of dumping the barrel, we added pounds of fresh, tart, Northern Michigan cherries and Old Sour Cherry was born. A velvety, full bodied, complex blend of roasted chocolate malt and tart cherry, this is a beer that can be drank fresh or is capable of developing beautifully in the bottle for years to come.

Sample at the Hopsnobbery Collective barrel-aged beer tasting on 08/11/2012. Hazy dark brownish pour with a medium beige head that dissipates slowly to a film. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of cherries, oak and malt. Medium to full body with a moderately tart cherry character and notes of malt, oak and vanilla. The finish is fruity with a funky cherry aftertaste. Above average overall.
