Old Sour Cherry Porter was not a beer that was planned, but one that has become a staple at Rivertown. This delicious disaster was born when it became apparent that the original intentions of brewing a Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter became compromised by wild yeasts and bacterias. Instead of dumping the barrel, we added pounds of fresh, tart, Northern Michigan cherries and Old Sour Cherry was born. A velvety, full bodied, complex blend of roasted chocolate malt and tart cherry, this is a beer that can be drank fresh or is capable of developing beautifully in the bottle for years to come.

Bomber from jtclockwork, drunk with MartinT on 3/1/14
Ruddy, amber-brown body is clear, leaving the light sediment behind. Small ring of off-white bubbles recedes quickly.
Dry, acidic cherries and dry chocolate malt notes give the impression of a very serious, dark, sour porter. I like that. Some vanilla and maybe a touch of buttercream in the nose. A bit of bready maltiness chips at the sour character. No alcohol or off notes.
Sour up front, quite fully lactic with the cherry acids in the background but quite comfortably flavorful. The body is very light, rather overattenuated at this point, or working its way there. The carbonation is light, fizzy and rather insipid, which is my biggest complaint here. That and the somewhat bready maltiness. Reminds me a bit of Tulach Leis from Vermont Pub. Not that sweet or full of diacetyl, but along those lines. Still, very nice lactic sourness up front makes the rest somewhat more bearable.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with beige head. The aroma is cherry and oak. Thin mouthfeel with a light cherry with roast and oak. Easy to drink hiding alcohol well, very good.

Clear dark brown pour under a beige head. Tart cherry aroma, vinous, some chocolate. Nice flavor. Not overly tart but cherry, wine and chocolate all in a pleasant combination.

22oz bottle pours a watery, dark brown with some clumpy, white head. Nose has some candy, plum, a little licorice, vinegar, some berry, cherry, a little bread. Flavor has a lot of acid, malt vinegar, cherry, raspberry, some prune, some bread, a little cream soda. Sour finish. May have spent too much time in the bottle.

Bottle. Musty tart cherry aroma. Chestnut with minimal head. Sweet bourbon and tart cherry malt flavor. Not bad. Mainly sour - don’t get much out of the porter.

Slutfest 2013: Fruitcake nose, replete with cake, nut, and maraschino cherry notes. Clear brown, medium tan head. Sour hazelnut flavor. Kind of woody on the back end. Very nice.

Deep brown with a small head. Aroma is tart cherries, lightly sweet malts, and not much else. The sourness really powers thru most of other traits. Medium bodied. Flavor is sour cherry, lightly roasted malts, a bit of chocolate and light funk. Finishes tart. Solid beer.
