Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washington’s recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel aroma to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare. Our Porter, inspired by Washington’s, is dark, smooth and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish.

12 ounce bottle. Translucent dark brown color. Small light tan head. Nice clinging lace. Nose is cocoa malt and coffee. Upfront, flavor is sweet roasted malt with a touch of milk chocolate, raisins, molasses and citrus hops. Medium bodied with roasted malt and coffee notes. Finishes dry and bittersweet with a cloying sticky mouthfeel.

Bottle sample at a tasting at kerenmk’s place. Thanks Ariel. Dark brown to black with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate, nuts, caramel, a bit of coffee and a fruity touch. Sweetish flavor with chocolate, nuts, molasses, a bit of caramel and a finish with a coffee note and a bit of alcohol. Medium-bodied.

Pretty tasty Porter. Chocolate and lots of roast. Finishes light bitter with some sourness. Black pour with OK head and lacing. A little more watery and slick than many porters. Bottle pour from brewpub.

Pours black into a Sam glass. Tan head recedes to skim surface leaving scant lacing. Sweet cocoa and coffee aromas. Robust with sweet molasses front to back. Lasting sweet cocoa finish.

Shaker pint draft at the Jet Rock in the Philadelphia airport. The pour is a hazy darker brown with a 1/2 inch tan head. The head retention was great, leading to nice lacing on the glass. The aroma is deep roast, dark chocolate notes, and a faint brewed coffee smell. The taste is semi sweet caramel malt right away, followed quickly by the roast character. The dark chocolate of the nose gets a bit sweeter, and appears in the back of the taste, where it is joined by decent shot of bitterness. The palate is medium bodied, nice creamy mouth feel, bitterness gives finish a nice dry character. Nice one.

Draft @ the brewery, 13 Oct 2012. Nearly black color with cream colored head following with nice retention. The aroma is roasted, some caramel and espresso notes. Lightly bitter coffee flavor with chocolate, dry roast, hints of toffee. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. I think this is a nice representation of what a porter would have been like during Washington’s day. It’s not complex but solid for sure. My favorite brew from my visit to the brewery.

Bottle at my Uncles house, PA - 20/05/12. Dark brown in colour with a decent tan head. Roasted malts and nuts on the nose. Taste as nose with a little mollasses and bitter chocolate. Medium bodided but a little over carbonated.

Bottle. Very dark brown color. Aroma - not sure what to make of this one, interesting spice and trees. Taste is sweet and syrupy with a tangy finish. Definitely unique.
