Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washington’s recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel aroma to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare. Our Porter, inspired by Washington’s, is dark, smooth and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish.

From tap. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted dark malty and slight phenolic flavoured. Caramelish and roasted. Bitter and dark roasted malty into the finish. Ends dry and malty, phenolic too.

Overall Impression: This was a fairly straight forward porter with some decent malty flavors. Nothing too exciting, but the recipe has held up well-enough over time. Solid, enjoyable stuff.

Deep brown with a tan head. Aroma is of chocolate, caramel, molasses, and toasted oats. Silky smooth body. Flavor has burnt malts, cocoa, molasses, and oatmeal. Lightly sweet with a lightly burnt finish. A very nice porter that masks the 7% well. If I didn’t know the abv I’d go all night with this one...or at least till it finished me off.

Beer fetched from downstairs by cgarvieuk - Cheers Craig! Opaque black beer. No head. Moderate carbonation - light palate - fairly dry. A little lactose sweetness. Spritzy. That’s about it - and airy dark malt beer.

Draught @ White Horse on Parson’s Green, 1-3 Parson’s Green, London, Greater London England SW6 4UL.Clear dark brown color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, dark roasted, light dark chocolate, butter notes. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and heavy bitter with a average to long duration, coffee, dark roasted, light notes of acidic malt. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20100730]

Variety case: Pours a dark brown with a pretty nice looking creamy tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, with a real nutty feel to it. Nicely bodied, so it doesn’t go down too heavy. A little bittersweet. Dark chocolate is the most present flavor. I suppose that there are some hops in there giving it an additional bitter and hoppy edge. Feels nice and creamy. A good porter. Good job Washington.

12 ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark dark brown color with a thin head. Fairly poor head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts and a bit of chocolate and smoke. Taste is roasted malts, molasses, caramel and a moderately bitter hoppy finish. Medium bodied. I’m starting to dig this molasses beer thing.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a small brown head. The aroma was light sweet roasty malts and a hint of molasses. The flavor had a fairly strong molasses element followed by light roasty malts and floral hops and a touch of anise. There was a vaguely sour finish. The mouthfeel was moderately smooth. Solid.
