Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washington’s recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel aroma to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare. Our Porter, inspired by Washington’s, is dark, smooth and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown almost black colour with a small tan head. Sweet malty fruity hoppy aroma. Dry malty roasted flavor with some hoppy hints. Dry malty roasted finish with a nice bitter aftertaste.

Purchased at Beaver Valley Beverage in Monaca. Cost was $1.10 per bottle. The case said Lovers Stout but this is what was inside, I was a little dissapointed. Carbonation is barely there. A dark beer that is pretty strong with a little bitter aftertaste. Flat, Ever so slightly little dark bitter chocolately or coffee. Many other less expensive dark beers may be better than this. Will not buy again.

12 oz bottle-pours a rich, creamy tan head. Color is a very deep amber. Taste is a chocolate malty, toasty. Good carbonation. A nice occasional beer.

I can’t figure out the dating system on the bottles. Must be a 2004 bottle though. Pour is black/brown with a moderate amount of head, decent retention. Beige colored head is creamy, but slightly watery and not well-retained. Aroma of brown sugar, bubblegum, chocolate and light roast and milk. Flavor is initially quite sweet, chocolatey, milky and has a mostly watery texture, very low carbonation. Gains some bitterness and roast on the finish. That sweet molasses/treacle/brown sugar is mostly dominant and lingers on the finish, getting a bit boring towards the end of the glass. A bit watery overall, but hides the alcohol well. Medium body.

Real hazy/muddy burgundy/brown coloured body with almost no head at all! Aroma of grapes, malt, raisins and some caster sugar. Medium-bodied; Roasty malt taste, fairly watery with some mild sweetness and a metallic bitterness. Aftertaste shows some lingering alcohol behind with unpleasant maltiness. Overall, not a good beer, but worth trying! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased at Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 27-September-2004.

Very dark brown. Straightforward porter – toast, coffee, molasses…a tad wet body. Decent malt development but not nearly as interesting as other historical re-creations like Flag Porter.

As they claim - its a rich dark beer. It has the rich maltiness and full body of any of the best oatmeal stouts I've had. Also a nice hint of bitterness. A very good beer. Pours a little too bubbly - then has little head to speak of.
