St Austell’s most legendary ale, Hicks is fullbodied strong and Cornish, brimming with a kaleidoscope of flavours. Brewed with plenty of malt and lashings of English Fuggles and Golding hops, Hicks is truly a classic ale of considerable depth and complexity.

Appearance is amber, fairly clear, a small white foamy head which leaves lacing. Malty, slightly spicy aroma. Taste is malty, a bit of toffee, hop bitterness, raisin hints. Good.

(Cask at Black Door, 20140117) The beer poured amber and clear. Its head was small, long lasting and white. Aroma had malts, toffee and mildly earth. Palate was medium bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were grass, earth, toffee, malts and bitterness. Afteraste had malt and bitterness. A nice balanced bitter.

Bottle from Tesco, Watford (I think). Poured a slightly hazy amber colour with a thin off-white head. Aroma of stewed fruit, toffee and raisins. Sweetness on the tongue too, with notes of brown sugar, apple pie and meringue. Palate was copper, stale malt and cooked fruit. Not sure if there was something wrong with the bottle, but it tasted more like the packaged dessert isle than the beer one...
