Pours a deep black with a decent amount of tan head. Aroma is sweet with caramel, some chocolate and malt. Some spices are also evident in the aroma. Taste is of dark malts and plenty o’ hops along with chocolate and caramel with some spices to round it all out. Overall not a bad brew, but I can’t say its my favorite porter.

Bottle - Pours very dark with a nice, foamy head. Tastes of chocolate and coffee, and is overly dominated by roasted malt flavor. The balance seems a little off. Mouthfeel is good. I’ve definitely had better from Sam Adams though. Granted I may just not be a big Porter fan.

A clear deep dark porter with a huge moka head, with a nitrogen tap look to it (its a bottle though). Nice. Cold coffee and and chocolate in aroma, with butterscotch notes (good in this case). In mouth, rather nice rich bittersweet chocolate with burned coffee bitterness, and a decent medium body. A very decent porter. Bought in Potsdam, NY, early 2005.

Bottle. Chocolate malt aroma with a hint of mint. Very dark brown - opaque with little head. Chocolate mallt flavor also with a hint of mint - moderate carbonation with a good hops finish.

Not bad. Dark garnet, not quite opaque. Dense brownish head. Rich caramel and toffee aroma, just a dash of grassy hops. Sweet and rounded up front, with caramel giving way to a semi-sweet chocolate finish. Light hints of coffee and roast in the aftertaste. Decently smooth.

Dark brown in colour with a nice super dense tan head and ruby highlights to the body when tilted. Aroma of nuts, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, metal, blood and caramel-pretty nice aside from the metallic twang. Medium-bodied; Strong roasty malt presence with chocolate coming out in the taste and a slight bitter nuttiness. Aftertaste shows the malt and caramel more than anything else. Overall, better than I had expected from Sam Adams, but not the best porter I could imagine drinking. Definitely a welcome treat from the usual Vienna Style in the Winter pack. Many thanks to Phil (haddon90) for letting me have this bottle! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle pulled from the 2004 Sam Adams Holiday Sampler Pack on 15-December-2004.

I think Sam Adams gets a bad rap sometimes, and people are overly critical of the brewer. Sam Adams brews high-quality beers, even the ones that are bland and boring. They are still well-made! This beer is no exception. Pours a dark brown color with a medium beige head that dissipated quickly. Thin and sticky lacing. The aroma is roasty with malt, dark chocolate and hops. Medium-bodied with bitter chocolate undertones. Malt, caramel and some coffee flavors. The finish is where the hops become more apparent. All in all this Porter is not up there with Fuller’s and the like but it is definitely a good beer.

2004 bottle. Pours a clear dark mahogany brown with light tan tinges on the sides and a yellow head. Aroma of hops, light roast and some strange acidity. Nuttiness and light caramel. Flavor is lightly roasty, moderately sweet, with a good musty/dusty English feel to it. Must be the chocolate malt. No alcohol apparency, moderate bitterness on the end. Amazingly, this beer did not lose flavor on the end, and was quite medium-full bodied throughout. No wateriness, good flavor. I was shocked. Typical Sam Adams sharp, fizzy carbonation though.

Pours is a deep red with no real head. Aroma is is thin and nothing really stands out. Flavor is chocolate and malts but again nothing really stands out. Overall pretty uneventful.

I got this one in the holiday pack. Next to the Fezziwig which is the real gem of the collection - this beer comes in a close second. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle - with a pretty label I might add - this beer poured a black color with a small brown head. The aroma was rather pleasant and contains sour malt, tangy fruit and chocolate elements. The mouthfeel was reasonably thick. The flavor was very malty, loaded with chocolate and had a hint of fruit. There was a strong hop finish in the finish. This is a rather good porter. Not one of the best, but certainly a strong contestant in the second tier. I would happily purchase a case of this one.
