Notes from October 2009 Pint glass pour, no respect. :P Hazy, muddy, orange brown. Couple inches of pop-marked yellowed head leaning back & forth like a nearly capsized buoy. Lace is like an albino honey comb. Incredibly sticky & uniformly coating. On the second pour, it was more like insulation spray foam. :o Smell wasn't so intense as it was rich. Mandarin orange & pineapple concentrated down into syrup, pine sap, salty, something like leeks; perfume-y with a slight stiffening edge of alcohol. A little honey & yeast trailing. Taste was initially masked by the thick & creamy mouthfeel. Half a second, & some honey loaf comes on board. Sweet, then overwhelmed. Without another gap, sharp floral & citric bitters hit, leading the way into an incredibly dry pine & mint sensation that leaves me thirstier then when I had started. Grass, it's sprouting up everywhere! Pack your machete. Pretty big, but manageable if you know it's coming. Touch soapy if your looking for it. Very similar backend hop characteristic to Otter Creek's IIPA, though that was way too much, one dimensional, & just plain terrible. Even not being an IPA guy, this is pretty entertaining. The way it dries out so quickly, while still delivering some real crusty & rindy flavors. The body isn't slick. It could be thought of as a touch grainy, or maybe just dirty. The alcohol seems to propagate as it warms, but is very reasonable if your not taking pinkie swigs. No big blasts of Lysol that I get with other big IIPAs. A decent value if you can tolerate the rest of the six pack. This is a big one. Props to Sam Adams for taking a chance. :)

2nd October 2009
Bottle purchased in a Las Vegas liquor store. Hazy dark amber beer. Malty and rich hop nose. Sweetish beer. Rich marmalade hops with a nice floral tone. Lingering bitter aftertaste. A little different this one and tasty!

Pours a cloudy amber/copper color with a thinnish off white head that dissipates to a cap but never really leaves me. Smells of Grapefruit! Like Florida’s finest in a bottle. Mix in some caramel, but not to much and that’s what I smell. Taste is what you’d expect, citrus mostly grapefruit bitterness from start to finish. The malt tries to poke through, but never really succeeds. Lingering bitterness on the finish. Body is thick, mouthfeel is syrupy/resinous, carbonation is average. Great hop bomb!

This beer is a hazy orange-amber color with a medium white head that dissipates steadily. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Citrusy hops aroma with some malty notes. Medium body with a moderately bitter hops character that has citrus and pineapple notes. Some malt and spices in the background as well. The finish is hoppy with a bitter aftertaste. Full disclosure, I wasn’t aware this bottle was from previous Longshot competitions when I bought the single. However the likely aging didn’t seem to affect the beer as far as I could tell. Slightly above average overall.

Tasting at Papsø
Hazy light amber color; medium sized creamy head. Large hop aroma, but strange, with a vein of of butter, cream, phenols, sweat. Quite strong body, but the mouthfeel is rather oily; sweetish toffee flavor, with oily hops, powerful. Not refined, but satisfying when looking for hops.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of madmitch76. Pours a cloudy amber with a dense off-white head. Aroma is massive hops - getting too astringent. Solid body, fruity and sweet, but it’s al just really a base for a massive and unrefined hop soup. Really crude and way too much. 100410

bottle - Pours very hazy copper with a large off-white head that leaves heavy lacing. There’s a big, very grapefruit heavy hop aroma. The big citrus hops flavor has a good, solid malt body backing it up. Very nice brew.
