Dark amber, slight ruby, initially large head that shrinks quickly, leaving a tiny lacing - aroma of cinnamon and caramel - flavor has some of the same, as well as a very cookie/toasty kind of flavor - some chocolate - toasty finish with lingering malts - a pleasant surprise.

Nov 2003: Bleh. Overly spiced, cloying and unbalanced. Hard to finish this one, and I've been starting to like spiced beers more and more. Nov 2002 update: The new one is really nice, and I'm upping the numbers on it this year: V. dark garnet with small sticky beige head. Rich malty chocolate and spicy aroma - like baking cookies or spice cake. Notes of ginger and cinnamon. Clean malt with caramel and chocolate flavors, hint of ginger and pepper. Lightly fizzy mouthfeel. 2001: One of the more characterful brews from SA. Rich spicy aroma and flavor with plenty of malt depth. Spice flavor is almost nutmeg, but there's none of that in here. Background of orange peel is nice. Balanced bitterness is appropriate. Main drawback is overcarbonation. It has a nice lasting head and coating lace, but the sharp prickly mouthfeel hurts this beer's warming, sipping quality. Nice brownish red color.

2001 bottle. oh wow this was good. Had this in the winter sampler. Is this really Sam Adams? why dont they make the rest of their beers this good. Amazing complexity for this brewery, with good caramel malt notes. Not too spicy though, must be some nut in there too. A great old ale, something not seen from America much.

I really wish this one was available year round, as it is Sammy's best offering, edging out the Winter Lager. I really had trouble placing the aroma, it was kind of like toasted wheat bread with a hint of orange. The color was rich and so was the taste. Refreshingly complex.
