This is the big, hearty ’red wine’ of our range. Nine malts are blended to produce layers of caramel, coffee, liquorice, chocolate and roasty flavours and these are balanced by a tart, raisiny fruitiness that gradually gives way to a lingering dry finish. Rich, full bodied. warming and moreish. Stonecutter pairs well with venison, roast beef or lamb, or the heartiest casseroles and stews. For dessert try with a creme brulee or, of course, Scottish shortbread.

From a 500ml bottle on 19/7/2012. Pours a dark red amber with a small head. Has a very pleasant malty aroma, some distinct caramel, fruity and spicy notes. This is a real malt bomb, with caramel, toffee and toast all prevalent. You also get plums and berries, and some herbal flavours, providing a slightly tart bitterness. Has a medium to full body. A fine beer with quite a bit of complexity.

Bottle: Poured an amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of dry caramel malt with light cereal notes is pleasant though not as rich as I would have expected. Taste is also dominated by cereal notes with dry caramel grainy notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Not bad though I prefer scotch ale sweeter and with bigger malt profile.

Pours brown with a large, growing head.Nose shows chocolate, sultanas, caramel, and nutty malt. Pretty moreish.Flavours include more caramel and chocolate alongside nutty malt. Quite sweet.Spoiled a little by the excessively high carbonation though.

01/07/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (375ml bottle). Rossa, limpida, intensa, con buona schiuma biancastra abbastanza persistente. Aroma di malto e lieviti, con lievi e fastidiose note bruciate. In bocca è maltata, caramellata, cioccolatosa, con una lieve ma fastidiosa punta finale di lieviti bruciati. Un po’ corta, poco complessa, grezza e sgraziata. Corpo medio, carbonazione corretta. In pessime condizioni, è stata davvero una delusione. Mi piacerebbe riprovarla, perché secondo me merita di più.

Bottle at home from my GBBF 2011 haul ... deep copper ... big light tan head ... sweet fruity malt ... rich soft toffee malt ... little peppery nose ... juicy malts ... sweet toffee malts ... dark mellow vine fruits .... juicy ... again a little peppery hop ... light pine hints ... and lime peel ... just very plesant and drinkable

Pours a hazy deep amber colour with a creamy beige head that disappears slowly and leaves big lacing. Aromas of plum and raisins, very fruity, with some light rusty water. Medium-bodied wet mouthfeel. The taste is less powerful than what the nose gives out. Mild bitterness the whole way with the fruit in the background and some light burnt wood comes out in the aftertaste. Really !??! There is 7% ABV in here ?? Pretty smooth overall and more refreshing than warming scottish ale.

Bottle at Brewdog Bar, Aberdeen. It pours deep ruby, with a decent beige head. The nose is dark fruit, blackcurrant, red grape, orange, caramel, toffee and honey. The taste is dark fruit: plum, blueberry, raisin and cherry, as well as: roasted malt, red wine and salted liquorice, with a long dry finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Tasty.

This Scotch ale poured a deep amber colour with a thick, creamy, tan coloured head. To the nose there are scents of ripe fruit, dough, spice and brown sugar. First sip was smooth and creamy with full flavour malt and other flavours of toast and caramel. Finish is rich and almost oily with heavy malt flavours and a slightly bitter hopp finish.

Bottle from GBBF, 2011. Drank at home. Dark reddish-brown pour with a beige head. Vanilla, raisin, malt and a little smoke aroma. Sweet, dry finish.
