Saison: Bottle Conditioned Ale (Smokestack Series)
The French-speaking region of southern Belgium is the birthplace of saison, the love child of a centuries-old tradition of small rural "farmhouse" breweries, where native yeasts and time-honored recipes combined to produce some of the world’s most distinctive beers. As a tribute to this artisanal institution, we offer our own brisk, unruly Saison. Truly an artful balancing act, it is both rustic and subtle, robust yet effervescent, spicy and fruity.

750ml corked bottle. Belgian-style conditioning, lots of foamy head. Thick, opaque bronze color. Rich and sweet, with some mellow earthy hops. Captures the style fairly well, but not quite exactly. Deeper and richer, more malty I suppose. Thick and yeasty, this is still a world-class beer. Soapy, bitter, earthy hop aftertaste, delightfully mellow. Worth seeking out.

Bottle as shown. Pours a pale yellow golden with a large frothy white head that lasts awhile with a lot of bubbles and carbonation. Good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a sweet corn malt with grain and citrus. Thin mouthfeel with a very crisp lemon zest and a nice bitter finish. Very refreshing, easy to drink. A very good saison from Boulevard.

Bottle: Rich golden pour with a large, creamy white head. Nose is very dry... Floral and earthy tones. Tastes dry and floral too with more earthy notes, floral hops, and a light malt character. Light amount of Belgian spices, namely cloves. Citrus and straw. Fun. Thanks Ditmier.

An almost clear golden ale with a thin white head. A pleasant funky aroma of coriander, pepper, catnip and citrus. In mouth, a good spiced malt with light coriander, orange and black pepper. A classy saison. Tasted at Mondiale 2008, June 1 2008.

Bottle: Poured a hazy shiny blonde color ale with a huge pure white foamy head with good retention and even some lacing. Aroma consists of fruity and light funky ester with a solid floral malt backbone. Taste is also a well balanced mix between some floral malt with some light fruity ester and a somewhat yeasty spicy finish. Full body with some great carbonation and no alcohol could be detected. Very well done and another winner from a brewery that I would like to taste more beers from.

Bottle from batch 508060. Pours with a huge, rocky, white head and a clear yellow body. Good lacing from the head. Aroma of apples, dreyness, pepper, yeasty spiceyness, and a bit of bread and a touch of funk. My roomate said it smelled a bit like a Wit, but I didn’t really get much of that. Taste is lightly sweet with pepper, pears and apples. Lively carbonation and a bit dry. Good yeast profile, a nice, fruity saison.

Bottle from Wine and Cheese Place in (near) St. Louis, MO. Slightly hazy gold color with a 3-finger fluffy white head that perservered. Aroma of light funk, citrus, yeast/spice. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Very fresh citrus and light stone fruit flavors over a bit of sweet malt. Then the sweet goes away and there is astringent light funk. It also seems to have nice fruity hop. It really digs into the rear edges of the tongue. Nice touch on the upper front too. This thing is incredibly drinkable.

Bitter hop aroma. Cloudy gold color. A little sweet, but with bitterness and yeast. The yeast gives some weird aroma, but this is much more mild than I expected. Good palate.
