Saison: Bottle Conditioned Ale (Smokestack Series)

The French-speaking region of southern Belgium is the birthplace of saison, the love child of a centuries-old tradition of small rural "farmhouse" breweries, where native yeasts and time-honored recipes combined to produce some of the world’s most distinctive beers. As a tribute to this artisanal institution, we offer our own brisk, unruly Saison. Truly an artful balancing act, it is both rustic and subtle, robust yet effervescent, spicy and fruity.

750 ml bottle from Whole Foods in Brentwood, MO. Uncorked, this unleashes a big, fluffy white head that covers a cloudy yellow body. Aromas are kind of funky and sour with a bit of a floral and lemon side to them. Flavor has a touch of white pepper to add to the funk and lemon thing. Very nice and refreshing...

Throwdown. Pleasing floral and spicy aroma with a light yeasty sourdough bread. Flavor is quite light, with only a light yeastiness and fairly clean malts. Light refreshing finish.

Pour is a bright yellow with a large white head. Aroma is yeasty and spice but the main thing i get is a strong citrus. Flavor is good with some peppery spice, yeastyness and again a strong citrus. After the swallow it leaves the musty barnyard funk on the tounge. A very tasty and heavily carbonated beer. Now Im going to have saison burps all night.

Nice slightly hazy golden body with a nice white head. Aroma of fresh wheat, light hops, coriander seed and curacao with a hint of the yeast. Medium-bodied; Highly carbonated mouthful with a good dose of the malt and yeast up front fading to a strong alcoholic and metallic twang near the end. Aftertaste shows a bit of sweetness with mostly musty and earthy flavours and a touch of the hops comes through too. Overall, a very dry and interesting mouthful saison - definitely not one of my favourites, but obviously not a horrible beer. I sampled the 75 cL bottle purchased from Goebel Liquor in Wichita, Kansas on 26-March-2008.

Thanks to valpoaj for this - beautiful hazy straw-colored beer, with a storm of bubbles in the glass, and a frothy, well-sustained head - aroma of honey, spices, strong coriander and orange peel, lavender, and mellow notes of other wildflowers - high carbonation, but it’s soft in the mouth - honey sweet up front, but there are loads of flowers, and warming spices and bittering herbs that come up to keep it from overstaying its welcome - some grain/wheat - spices warm the throat - very nice.

750ml bottle from mreusch; Nose is light funk, yeast, and spices (cloves, nutmeg, corriander); clear yellow with a huge off-white head; flavor has very light tart hints, light hop bitterness, yeasty breadiness, and the peppery spiciness; pretty decent!

Bottle shared by BBB63. Hazy sediment-laden straw body, thick off-white head. Floral, spicy nose, light fruit, and bread. Delicate. Light, sweet body with dry, bitter indistinguishable spice. Good bite and sharp carbonation. Just a touch of white grape in the sweet malt. Avoids overbalancing the spice with heavy malts. It’s a good thing.

750 ml bottle purchased at Lukas in Kansas City, MO. Batch number S8254. Pour hazed white yellow copper with a fluffly and lasting 3 inch white head. Nice lacing as the head falls. Aroma of soft, gentle wheat grain, with a great yeastiness of clove behind that. Nice mineral elemnt, along with some faint citrus hops. Engaging nose, lovely. Taste is the grainy citric wheat, with clove spice yeastiness. Foolowing is nice clean hop bitterness that finishes beautifully along with the clove and white pepper of the yeast. The mineral element is ever preseny and is flinty. Palate is nicely carbonated, medium with a dryish finish. Really nice saison. (9,4,8,4,17 - 4.2)

750 ml bottle, corked and caged, enjoyed at Blanc Burgers in Leawood, Kansas. Pour (into a Boulevard Chalice, mach 2 - nice touch Blanc!) is a hazy cloudy yellow golden with a thick and lasting white head. As the head falls, nice lacing is left behind. Pretty beer. Aroma is earthy, grainy wheat, with a touch of lemon citrus behind that. Behind the malt and hops is the yeastingess, which is also earthy and spicy. Overall a nice, layered nose. Taste is the nose, for the most part, with the grainy wheat taking the initial step forward, the citrus lemon close behind and the earthy spicy yeastiness taking over the finish. There is also a sweetness to the taste that was not present in the nose, and did detract a bit. Palate has nice carbonation, medium bodied with an earthy brief, dry finish. This was really good with the spicy lentil burger. Nice one. (9,5,8,4,16 - 4.2)

Sample at the Boulevard tasting at Lukas Wine Bar in KCMO. This is a preview of the "Smokestack Series" expected to be released in September of 2007. Pour is cloudy yellow and a nice white head. Aroma is great, citrus, grapefruit, yeastiness and a bit of wet dirt. Taste is very smooth, with the citrus and grapefruit shining through. This is a very nice sipping brew, though not nearly as complex as other Saisons I have tried. It was a delight having a Saison on tap, though. (8,4,7,4,15 - 3.8)
