St. Nicholas, aka Santa Claus, is a magical figure, the bringer of gifts and an icon of holiday spirit. Forgotten by most is his evil side kick and enforcer of ‘the list’. European tradition says while St. Nick is busy delivering presents to good little boys and girls, Krampus hands out punishments to the bad. A fanged, goat-horned bully, the Christmas Devil uses sticks and chains to beat the naughty children. Dark malts and aromatic hops create the diabolical spirit of this brew. It is finished with lager yeast and aged cold for no less than 30 days. This Imperial Helles Lager will warm even the darkest hearts.

This season, replace the cookies with a bottle of Krampus. If he happens to pay a visit, toast to him with this devilish brew. Merry Kramp-mas to all, and to all a good pint!

Taste like a jacked up lager.

22 ounce bottle. Deep amber orange color. Nice creamy beige head. Note able grapefruit hop nose. Some burnt sugar malt as well. Tangy toasted malt flavor with a big resiny hop punch. Bitter citrus peel and brown sugar notes upfront. Crisp, bitter and boozy. Long bitter aftertaste seems to go on forever.

Best of this style (that I’ve tried). Dark golden body with adequate but thin head. Wonderful malty aroma, and robust taste. perfect all around.

Associated Cityfresh, Bushwick growler: Pours a copperish amber with a white head. Aroma is pretty hoppy, somewhat piny, some light caramel style malts. Taste is quite bitter. Also somewhat lightly sweet. Hard to drink quickly. This is well-made but it ain’t my favourite.

22 oz. bottle from Julio’s liquors. Nice amber color with foamy white head that coats the glass. Aroma is sweet with a good citrus hoppiness and maltiness.Taste is simcoe and / or Chinook hops with some toasty malt, light caramel or toffee notes. Bitterness hangs around for a longer duration. Overall this is really well balanced and is really well crafted. I would seek out the Krampus and lay a beat down on him.

22 ounce bottle into pilsener glass, bottled on 9/19/2012. Pours lightly hazy copper amber color with a nice 2 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass; with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, toast, pine, citrus rind, toffee, biscuit, floral, grass, and piney spiciness. Damn nice aromas with good balance, strength, and complexity. Taste of caramel, toast, pine, toffee, biscuit, citrus rind, floral, grass, nuttiness, and piney spiciness. Good amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, biscuit, toffee, pine, nuttiness, floral, citrus rind, and piney spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Great malt/hop flavor balance and complexity; with a solid sweetness/bitterness balance as well; minimal cloying flavors present on the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, sticky, and crisp mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish; this is dangerously drinkable. Overall this is a highly excellent Imperial Helles style! Great malt and hop flavor balance and robustness; very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of jcnielsen. Thanks Jetson! Pours a clear, dark orange appearance with a cream colored head. Somewhat spicy, grainy, kind of thick toasty, light caramel malty aroma. Light citrus fruity, sticky, somewhat piney hoppy, toasty syrupy malty, light caramel, bready flavor with a thick, somewhat thick, a bit boozy finish. Not all that hard to drink but it’s kind of lacking in character.
