St. Nicholas, aka Santa Claus, is a magical figure, the bringer of gifts and an icon of holiday spirit. Forgotten by most is his evil side kick and enforcer of ‘the list’. European tradition says while St. Nick is busy delivering presents to good little boys and girls, Krampus hands out punishments to the bad. A fanged, goat-horned bully, the Christmas Devil uses sticks and chains to beat the naughty children. Dark malts and aromatic hops create the diabolical spirit of this brew. It is finished with lager yeast and aged cold for no less than 30 days. This Imperial Helles Lager will warm even the darkest hearts.

This season, replace the cookies with a bottle of Krampus. If he happens to pay a visit, toast to him with this devilish brew. Merry Kramp-mas to all, and to all a good pint!

Bomber. Poured on the eve of St. Nick even! Amber in appearance with a short lived head, oily head. Plenty of lacing throughout. Hop bitterness is up front, balanced by caramel malts. Some grapefruit, some pine, some warming alcohol. Kinda blurs the line with an IPA. Nice beer that packs a punch on a cold Wisconsin night!

22 oz. bottle. Pours copper with a small, beige head. The aroma is apples, nutmeg, saaz and some earthy hops, and caramel. The flavor is grainy sweetness and bitter. The palate is medium, sticky, grainy, and syrupy. Overall, this is a malty beer, with a nice hop profile.

Hazy dark orange pour that throws up a sticky off-white head. Sweet malt and flowery hop aroma. Light bitterness in the flavor that follows all the way to the finish. Crisp and refreshing.

Bottle sample at a tasting at kerenmk’s place. Thanks kerenmk. Deep amber color. Hoppy aroma, slightly floral and slightly piney, with a bit of malt and alcohol. Slightly sweetish flavor with some malt, grainy hints and a bitter finish with a bit of hops. Medium-bodied.

Krampus lives up to its namesake, as long as you pretend your palate is a naughty child and liquor heat serves as the stick. The beer gives a boozy, alcohol-fueled finish that is much too overpowering, even with such sweet, sticky lager malts. The modest fruitiness and strong hopping are no great shakes, but, even if they were, the warmth from this bottle would ruin them. Not my favorite.

From notes: Bottled @ Beer Temple. Copper color, off white head (not much). Aroma’s of (sweet) fruit, resin, a bit roasted malt/caramel. Flavor is medium sweet with a hint of acidity. Medium body. Eventually a bitter finish.
