St. Nicholas, aka Santa Claus, is a magical figure, the bringer of gifts and an icon of holiday spirit. Forgotten by most is his evil side kick and enforcer of ‘the list’. European tradition says while St. Nick is busy delivering presents to good little boys and girls, Krampus hands out punishments to the bad. A fanged, goat-horned bully, the Christmas Devil uses sticks and chains to beat the naughty children. Dark malts and aromatic hops create the diabolical spirit of this brew. It is finished with lager yeast and aged cold for no less than 30 days. This Imperial Helles Lager will warm even the darkest hearts.

This season, replace the cookies with a bottle of Krampus. If he happens to pay a visit, toast to him with this devilish brew. Merry Kramp-mas to all, and to all a good pint!

22 oz. bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours relatively clear golden / copper with a white head. Aroma of caramel, pilsner malt, slight grain and sweetness. Flavour of caramel, citrus hops, grains and a sweet boozy finish. Extremely good, especially for the style.

Clear dark orange, thick light beige head. Smell almost just malts. A weird finish which I don’t like. Too alcoholic, high carbo, medium to full body.

Draught at Ølbaren
Amber color; creamy head. Mild hop aroma, with mellow fruitiness and apricot jam. Full bodied, but the mouthfeel is a bit oily; it doesn’t have the malty and fruity characteristics of Ales, while the hopping is surely dominant and of good quality: resiny and fruity. The final, although well bitter, is completely lacking of malt backbone. Pleasant, without optimism.

Pours a deep copper with a good sized off white head that sticks around for a while. Smells of citrus and floral hops, a bit of caramel malt, some alcohol and an almost Belgian yeast character in there too. Tastes more malt than the aroma would suggest. Caramel and spicy floral and citrus hops fight it out. A bit of mineral in there as well. Full bodied, crisp carbonation, creamy/syrupy mouthfeel. This is definitely another outside the box brew from southern tier, God I love them for that. This one reminds me of a barley wine at times. I need to procure another one for further evaluation.

Bottle, 22oz. It’s hazy, golden colored and with a small, off-white head. The aroma has a pleasant blend of caramel maltyness and resiny hops. Sweet in the mouthm, a bit too sweet maybe, but there’s a solid dose of hops to bring balance. Resins and bitterness. It’s full-bodied and with a pleasant level of carbonation. Bitter and sweet finish. A quite nice one, but sort of too intense on both sweetness and bitterness. Still a beer I wouldn’t mind drinking again. 101015

Strong caramel nose with hoppy accents of grass and dried leaves. Peanut and cashew notes are also present. Clear orange, medium yellow head, nice lace. Lots of grass and dried leaves on the front. Vanilla creme finish, that doesn’t exactly fit. This is definitely imperial, but I’m not sure I like it. Good beer for what it purports to be, but it didn’t appeal to me.
