Black Hawk Stout retains the big traditional flavors of an Irish-style stout and yet offers a refreshing dry crispness that is rare in many dark beers. "Bottle Conditioned" Black Hawk Stout is replete with a rich, roasted malt flavor that makes this not-so-heavy stout, creamy and ever so smooth. It has a subtlety that surprises and converts even the most reticent stout drinker.

12oz bottle. A nice crisp, hoppy Stout. This is sort of a proto-Black IPA, with its oily specialty malt body and crisp hop bitterness. Relatively tame by todays standards, a pretty decent West Coast dark beer. Doughy chocolate with a hint of resinous mint. OK.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Daganβs place. Thanks kerenmk. Dark brown with a beige head. Nice aroma of chocolate and a bit of dark fruits. Sweetish flavor, pretty roasty, with chocolate, light fruitiness, light coffee hints and a drier finish. Medium-bodied.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Colonial Wine and Spirits, 6/11/12
Aroma: The nose is dry roasted/burnt malts, nutty notes, light coffee, and licorice
Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color with an off-white head and lid-heavy lace
Flavor: Tastes roasty and dry, malty (but only slightly sweet), with a burnt malt/licorice finish
Palate: The body is medium, with a smooth feel that is also mildly watery, and a somewhat dry finish
Overall Impression: I found this one to be a decent beer. It didn't work perfectly, but it certainly worked well enough. As I drink this the Kings are being given the Stanley Cup, I'm not sure what that has to do with anything, but I guess it is appropriate that this beer is from Cali (even if it is many hours from LA).

Pours black with small dark brown highlights with finger width beige head that dies quickly. Medium lacing, medium body, medium carbonation, and roasted malt aroma. Taste is roasted malt and light bitter finish. Pretty easy to drink for a stout, but not as good as their oatmeal stout. Not sure it is a dry stout, may be just a stout.

Bottle from Redmonds, Dublin. Deep dark brown pour with a thin tan head. Nose had some roast and dark choc present and it was a similar yarn taste wise with some burnt character. Pretty lively carbonation and lacking any real body. Some bitterness developed towards the finish but a vague metallic tang lets this down and this falls into the ranks of mediocrity.
