Black Hawk Stout retains the big traditional flavors of an Irish-style stout and yet offers a refreshing dry crispness that is rare in many dark beers. "Bottle Conditioned" Black Hawk Stout is replete with a rich, roasted malt flavor that makes this not-so-heavy stout, creamy and ever so smooth. It has a subtlety that surprises and converts even the most reticent stout drinker.

This stout poured a deep black colour with a big, tan, creamy head. Scents include chocolate, caramel, smoke, beef stock? First taste was full flavoured with flavours of burnt malt, smoke, coffee and nuts. Finish is slightly bitter with smokey goodness lingering.

Loose bottle, $1.39 @Binny’s. Pours mahogany brown. Force carbonated bubbles try for a few seconds to fall like Guinness bubbles, but this just isn’t a nitro’ed beer. Smell is not very strong, just some malts with a bit of roast. Taste is kind of light, too. Not bad; in fact, nice and dry, just a little roastiness that takes a while to get noticed. Turns out to be a nice mild stout.

Originally rated September 2004. Poured a black colour with red highlights and a creamy tan head. I could hardly smell any aromas (except for the unpleasant stench of wet socks - just a tad). Wow ! The taste was much better though. Smoky with burnt malts. Slightly bitter finish. Smooth mouthfeel, but a bit thin for a stout. Other then the nose, quite good.

Pours black into a shaker. Mocha head quickly recedes to hug rim. Roasted caramel and chocolate aromas. Dry and crisp with upfront chocolate turning to a lasting espresso finish.

10th June 2008. Very smooth stout - more like a porter to me. Very lightly toasted malt and quite light on the palate. Not much else going for it.
