It pours a deep red and gives a dark brown colored body. A foamy off-white one inch head appears and lasts for a good half minute. It leaves some nice spider-web foamy lacing. The smell is all about the caramel, almost slightly overbearing but as the beer warmed I noticed some of the roasted malts and nuts. The taste is definitely the caramel coming in ever so strong and pretty much not letting anything come out even as the beer warmed. The palate is light to medium with some light harshness on the tongue. Overall, well, by the name, I think Saranac/Matt knew what they were going for, so I think for them well done, for me, uh ... not impressed, could be a dessert beer, but not necessarily one I’d come back to.

12 ounce bottle from Harris Teeter - Barracks, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear dark brown color with a thin tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of pretty damn strong caramel notes, sweet and almost cloying, some butter and faint hops. The taste is faintly roasted malts, caramel, faint hops and a bitter finish. Medium bodied.

Bottle shared by Rustyhan and Legato. Pours dark caramel color with tan head. This beer smells great! Big caramel aroma. Flavor is sweet caramel. Is this a porter, really? I don’t get any roasty malt flavor. Medium body with average carbonation. Thanks Nick and Chris.

16th August 2008. Clear dark brown beer. Pronounced toffee caramel - loud and clear! Not that sweet and even a little sourness coming through at the end. Not a subtle beer, does what it says on the label, caramel and more caramel. Drinkable though!

bottle - Pours dark brown with a one finger tan head. It has a strong caramel aroma. The flavor is also heavy on the caramel. "Hints of real caramel used in brewing..."? Hints? No, the caramel completely dominates this beer. It’s medium bodied, very sweet, and finishes with some stale bitterness. Huh. I guess it’s okay.

Bottle. Dark brown to black, reddish tint. Small head. Sweet caramel aroma with some roasted malt. Roasted malt and caramel flavor. Roasted and hop bitterness at back of the malty sweetness. A slightly bitter hop finish, but the caramel goes all the way through. A touch too sweet.

Location: 12 oz bottle shared from Buy Rite, 10/5/14
Aroma: The aroma is extremely sweet, dessert-like, obviously tons of caramel, and not much else
Appearance: It pours a brown color with a tan head that leaves some fairly heavy lacing
Flavor: The taste is rather sweet as well, one-dimensional caramel, sugary
Palate: The body is medium, leaning light, sticky and a bit cloying, with a smooth, creamy finish
Overall Impression: I guess this was due for a re-rate. This isn't a bad beer, but it is one-dimensional and overly sweet. Definitely not a favorite of mine, and the re-rate hasn't changed that.

Overall Impression: Wow, the nose is ridiculous on this one. Smells like lots and lots of caramel. Taste is more subtle but still strong. Had to down grade the aroma because the Caramel was just too over-the-top.
