courtesy of Matta. Pours copper with beige head. Aroma of sweet caramel. Taste is malty with good emphasis on the caramel. Some grassy notes with an overall weak water mouthfeel. Finish has light subtle notes of caramel with a light bitter finish, though the overall caramel feel remains weak and disappointing.

Courtesy of THE matta. Yes, that matta. Pours deep dark brown with amber edges and off white head. Very caramel aroma with hints of roasted malts and way off in the background is toffee and butterscotch. Yum. The mild toffee and butterscotch add to the experience. The taste is roasted malts from front to back with a river of caramel running through it. Like in the nose the background is supported by toffee and butterscotch notes. It ends mildly roasty, caramel sweet and fading toffee.

Pours a dark brown color with a medium thick beige head that diminishes steadily. Caramel malt aroma with a light roasted character. Medium body with flavors of caramel, malt and charred marshmallow. The finish is sweet caramel and toffee with a short malty aftertaste. Overall this beer is one-dimensional and average, like most beers from this brewer.

This porter poured a deep black colour with a nice creany tan head. to the nose there is scents of heavy caramel. A little hopp and slight alcohol warming but I can’t get past the caramel. First taste was very creamy and smooth with a very strong flavour of caramel. It wasn’t until the caramel subsided that I could get a little hopp flavour. Palate had a little hoppy bitter flavour that barely came through.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a nice head and a thick aroma of caramel and brown sugar. Flavor is heavily caramel with a touch of a a funky, vegetable nip to it and a little oxidation. Wierd mix of flavors and I’m not sure that I wouldn’t like to see a little more dark malt presence to balance out the caramel with some chocolate. As is, it comes off as an experiment that didn’t quite come out balanced enough.

Toffee and caramel aroma. Clear brown pour with a medium, but lasting tan head. Hazelnut coffee taste. Thin mouthfeel. Butterscotch finish. I’m not crazy about butterscotch, but this tastes really good. I’d say there are probably adjuncts, but if this is natural it is truly spectacular. Way to go Saranac!

Bottle from 2006 pack, enjoying it in 2007...Wow!...holy caramel on the nose!....nice medium brown color with a tad tan foam...usual thin body I’ve come to expect from Saranac....but the taste is delish, hell with the body, caramel and caramel, and oh how about some more caramel??....not much else, a nice malt backbone to even the balance, nice job Saranac!...too bad this isn’t year round....liquid caramel without the thickness

Bottle from beastiefan2k, thanks Eugene! Pour is clear bronze amber with a medium white tan head that holds solidly. Aroma is caramel malt a slight touch earthiness and butterscotch. Initial taste is mostly the malt and butterscotch, though the finish as bit of bite to it. Not sure if it is hop bitterness or roast taste. The butterscotch is the main aftertaste. I liked this one.

12 oz brown bottle. Smells kind of savory when you pop the lid. Pours dark reddish brown in my steeler stein, with red glowing thru slightly in the transparent brew. Yes, it does have a caramel flavor that impacts your taste buds but it seems a little artificial and/or overwhelming when compared to Schells caramel bock. Flavor is OK on the commencement bud it yeilds to a bitter nut flavor. Finish is lingering pungent as if it were a stout. Yuengling’s black and tan is better. Saranac has so many different kinds of beer and many have that same background saranac flavor. Caramel was a little too artificial for me. Can only drink one at a sitting.

Smells like caramel and tastes like it too. As such it tastes far too sweet... unbearably so in fact. I drank this beer as fast as I could in order to get to a better beer, because i really did not enjoy the taste. I guess if you like excessively sweet beer this might float your boat, but otherwise avoid it like the plague
