What is a bière blanche? A traditional Flemish speciality with barley malt and unmalted wheat, spiced up with coriander and bitter orange rind. Friska is an opalescent, pale yellow coloured beer with a snow-white head. It is an original interpretation of the bière blanche brewed by young Sardinian brewer Nicola Perra who has personalised it by giving it a fuller body.

The result is a well balanced, fresh beer with citrus and spiced notes and the aroma of exotic fruits, but at the same time full and rich on the palate with tarty and citrus notes, making it a very refreshing and thirst quenching beer.

Good as an aperitif, with meals it compliments a gingered risotto, goes very well with boiled white fish served with olive oil and mayonnaise, it can be intriguing with a seafood salad, elegant with vegetable fritters and fancy with fresh herb cheeses.

Bottiglia.

0,75 bottle at Cagliari airport (Italy) Baccusardus. Opalescent yellow color, bright white medium foam. Nose: yeasty forward, almond milk start, crumb, citrus is hidden. Mouth starts yeasty, sweet, a bit fruity pulp (sweet). Finish is a bit spicy. This is a real reinterpreted wit.

Litt tåkete gulbrun med to fingre høyt hvitt skum. Lukter hvete, eple og røde bær. Lett fruktig søtlighet, noe fløtekaramell og hvete. Kort. Lite kullsyre.

Bottle. Light perfumed orangepeel nose. Pale golden, low white head. Full mellow foamy mouthfeel. Good balance between the wheat And the spices. Slightly too much perfume in the finish.

Hazy pale gold beer with a small white head. Palate is light, softish and semi dry. Minerally carbonation. Light wheaty malt, whisper of cream. Mild citrus. Finishes smooth with a final carbonated nip. Easy going if somewhat uninspiring.

Bottle from GBBF 2013 and drunk at home. Pale gold hazy lasting white head. Yep a zesty refreshing Belgian wit and just the right beer for sipping whilst cooking a Bolognese. Quite a hoppy finish.

Nice clear crisp golden coloured body with an orange hue and a thin white head that tops the beer nicely. Aroma of citrus, coriander seed, curacao (strong), malt, caster sugar, apples and pears. Medium-bodied; Assertive effervescence with a lot of coriander seed and curacao at first. Some light banana and yeastiness afterwards and a thin wheat and mellow sugar flavour at the end. Aftertaste is somewhat dry from straw and grass, a bit sweet and fairly nice. Overall, a decent beer - not amazing, but good to sample. I’d say this is a mix between a wit and a saison, but it’s more of a wit. I sampled this 37.5 cL ’split’ bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Alexandria (Old Town), Virginia on 13-June-2010 for a cool (not really) US$14 sampled at home in Washington on 03-July-2010.

No longer in stock where I think I got it. A dark blue 750 bottle. Pours pale yellow with a frothy 3-finger off-white head. Smells like pale malt with a touch of citrus. Near medium body with feisty carbonation. There’s a lot of citrusy aspect - maybe coriander? I don’t get exactly lemon or orange, but it’s citrus. Actually has a much sturdier mouthfeel than many wits. It’s a good beer. In California an expensive beer. Which will keep me from buying another unless I’m in Italy. However, the beer is good enough that I have no regrets on the purchase. The body holds up.

750ml bottle pours a hazy, translucent yellow with a frothy white head. Straw aroma, hay, grass. Flavor is very thin, lightly sweet, grass, lightly floral. Thin, watery finish.
