Sampled at the Hopsnobbery Collective Stout tasting on 01/23/10. Pours black with a medium and fizzy tan head that diminishes quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Roasted malt, caramel and coffee aroma. Medium, dry body with flavors of roasted coffee, earthy malt, hops and caramel. The finish is roasty with a short and mildly bitter coffee aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottle at Chriso Gaylord tasting 09. Some black choc on aroma. It’s ok, but a bit metallic on carbonation. Fine.

Bottle. Poured black with a minimal head. Aroma was full of dark malts and coffee notes with an undertone coffee. Flavor was actually a bit subdued with dark malts and coffee.

Bottled. Black color with a reddish glow. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt. Taste of a very malty schwarzbier, again good coffee notes. Good stuff.

22 oz. bottle from Sam’s, Apr’ 09. I note the label says "flavored ale" and "stout with coffee," unlike the first version which said "brewed with Starbucks Coffee." So it’s not exactly the same as before. Pours black as any stout would. Kicks up a big foamy brown head in my shaker glass. I caught a whiff of piney American hops when I cracked the cap. Still there in the glass, but overwhelmed by a sweet espresso smell. Taste heads this in the other direction, though. I start out with a strong coffee taste, but the the malts are way over-roasted. Or is the coffee burnt? Either way, it’s a big distraction from a beer that started out with some promise. But it is sticky sweet with malt sugars, and there is a bit of light-headedness after just half the bottle. So this is worth trying, though I’ve had coffee beers that went much, much smoother.

Pours black with light brown head. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Burnt malt flavor dominates with some bitter coffee grounds flavor also. Slightly acidic. Full body with minimal carbonation and a creamy, oily mouthfeel.

Pours black into an English pint. Mocha head with good retention pancakes and craters as it recedes leaving spider lacing. Cocoa and espresso aromas. Thin with coffee and dark chocolate front to back. Lasting espresso finish.
