This is an incredibly intriguing ale is made by aging our Old Heathen Imperial Stout in oak barrels that were used for making fine Kentucky bourbon! The result is an extraordinary, dark, and mysterious stout whose very essence has been enhanced. The aroma is filled with vanilla, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans. This silky-smooth brew has notes of oak, whiskey, roasted barley and vanilla that meld together on the tongue to create an incredible sensation. Heresy is released in February.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 2/3/2015. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, oak, light dark fruit, and roast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt, bourbon barrel, and light dark fruit notes; with great strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, oak, light dark fruit, and roast/oaky earthiness. Light roast/oaky bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, oak, light dark fruit, and roast/oaky bitterness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, bourbon barrel, and light dark fruit flavors; with a great malt/barrel balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, fairly creamy, and slightly bready/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent barrel aged imperial stout. All around great complexity, balance, and robustness of dark/roasted malt, bourbon barrel, and light dark fruit flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. The barrel character is very pronounced, but not overdone. A very enjoyable offering.

The beer is deep black. Thick chocolate nose, very intensive. The beer is smooth, roasted chocolate, the oak-wood fits in great and deep. Smooth and intense. The aftertaste is deep chocolate, wood, hints of roast. Great!

Bottle thanks to Matt. Pours a cloudy brown with beige head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is roast, dark chocolate, and coffee. Light roast, coffee, and dark chocolate with sweet finish. Decent.

Bottle at home 10th January 14. Great aroma, lots going on. Pretty dark... Black, taste is liquorice, some sharp and sweet notes, leather, oak and bourbon. Nice and better than Old Heathen

Very pruney, light hints of whiskey, not at all hot. Effervescent mahogany, thin tan head. A more even proportion of prune and whiskey on the palate. I don’t care for either individually, but they play nice together in this brew. Plum tartness in the finish. Harsh carbonation for the style, medium body. Not at all my preferred style of imperial stout, but I found enjoyment in it.

New beer Distributors, NY 12oz ($3.50): Pours black with a light brown head with wee lacing. Aroma is vanilla and lots of it, some coffee, and a bunch of milk chocolate; let’s not forget the hint of whiskey. Taste is rather much on the sweet side, but in a nice and balanced, almost cake-like way. Alcohol is well-covered, but all the aspects of whiskey manifest themselves. Nice mild aftertaste, but doesn’t linger too long. A tiny bit of burning on the tongue, but none in throat.

12 oz. bottle. Pitch black pour, with a small, rocky, light brown head. The aroma is bittersweet chocolate, vanilla, light smokiness, syrup, and rather significant notes of peat and whiskey. The flavor is very sweet, with some light roasted bitterness and a note of sourness in the finish. Heavy body, syrupy, and a little chalky. The finish is long, sweet, and sticky, with a lot of whiskey warming. Overall, this is a good stout, made significantly better with the application of whiskey barrels.
