This premium bitter, good to its name, has an enticing reddish hue. The aroma has vine fruits with a hint of caramel toffee from the aromatic malt and a nod towards the hoppiness to come. Red River has a smooth, full mouthfeel and an initial taste of almonds and some metallic flavour from the hops. There’s a good malt and hop balance and just enough alcohol warmth for the strength. As the taste develops the hoppiness grows with a long lingering bitter aftertaste with hints of pine and spice.

Cask half pint at the Jack Fairman (JDW), Horley. ABV was 4.8%. Copper colour, small white head. Malty aroma and flavour, some acidity, notes of English malt vinegar. Not in the best condition. Probably not a great beer even in better condition. Disappointing.

cask@The Catford Bridge Tavern, London "Oct 2012") Pours a amber colour, with a small beige head. Aroma of caramel malt and hops. mild. Taste is caramel malts, pine hops with bitter finish. Ok.

Cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green - 15/09/12. Clear russet/reddish brown with a thin white head that soon thins. Sweet caramel malts on the nose, toffee, plums, a little wood. Tastes of caramel, toffee, dark fruits. Medium body with moderate carbonation and a bitter finish. Decent enough drop and would re-visit.

Cask @Charlies Bar, Copenhagen. Pours a slightly hazy reddish pale amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty caramel aroma. Fruity malty caramel flavor. Has a fruity malty caramel finish with bitter hints in the aftertaste.

Cask at the Claret Free House. It pours dark red-amber, with a thin foamy white head and soft carbonation. The nose is wood, polish, nut and caramel. The taste is caramel, toffee, wood, nut, smoke, astringency and polish, with a dry finish. A better than average bitter.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW. Clear, rich gold pour with a small, foamy head. Sweet malts on the nose, with hints of caramel. Flavor is so so, bits of sweet malts and caramel, some socks, mild herbs and leaves. Light to medium in body with fine carbonation. I’ve got mixed feelings about the finish. Not overly impressed, but not altogether bad. Some sharpish malts, leaves, toast and citrus rind. Interesting.

50cl bottle from the Home Brew Shop, Aldershot. Bottle donditioned, and very lively on opening. giving half a glass of slightly hazy golden beer and half a glass of billowing cream head; the aroma is a typical Belgian-style mix of yeast and malt; some fruity malt flavours to start then the chocolate malt kicks in to give some dry bitterness towards the finish. Very pleasant after the initial surprise when opened.

Bottled. An amber beer with a bit of brown sediment floating around under a huge tan head - very lively when opened. The aroma has notes of malt and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and fruit, leading to a lightly bitter finish.
