Russian Imperial Stout made with smoked jalapeños from McClendon Select and smoked over Arizona mesquite wood, all aged on cocoa nibs (Papa New Guinea and Belize).

Well, well. What sits in front of you, this thick, monstrous, viscous … this is the Russian Imperial Stout. This is the crème de la crème of the beer world. The empress of Russia couldn’t get enough of it. This being the US of freaking A makes this the free world’s style, thus, the American Presidential nomenclature. Catherine the Great would have sat in the Hermitage and asked why jalapeños smoked over Arizona mesquite were used. We say this to CTG: This is ’Merica and this is Wilderness. This is OUR stout. Enjoy — we poured our hearts and souls into this one!

Draught at CBC 2014. Opaque black liquid with a small tan head. Aroma of coffee, licorice, oak, spices, apples (acetaldehyde), chocolate and smoked chilli. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with notes of coffee and licorice. Full bodied with low carbonation. Nice but a bit over hyped. Stop homering.

Sample @ CBC. Heavy coffee notes. Also burned sugar. Salmiak in aftertaste. Chili is shown through fruitiness rather than spiciness. Nice balance of roastiness, sweetness and saltiness.

Dark opaque black color, small steady brown head. Toasted maltyness and strong chilli in the nose. Hints of smoke too. Medium-bodied. Sweetish, vanilla, coffee. Jalapeno comes nicely in the finish, in flavor and with light ticking burn. Very well balanced beer for this ABV.

Aroma is peppery and spicy with some roasted tones. Flavour is rather spicy with some jalopeno-like vegetables and some cocoa tones. Peppery and nice but I expected more. Actually this feels rather thin – but I had two Hunahpu’s and one Dark Lord before this...

On tap at Wilderness pours with a deep dark looking body that supports a light mocha colored head. The aroma offers up big dark roastiness, some burnt malts, dark chocolate, molasses covered coconut and smooth sweet candy like booze. In the background I get some earthy chili meat mixed with a malt and a molasses sweetened smoky note. The taste begins with dark roasted malts and then hitting burnt malt notes mixed with dark chocolate and then a nice earthy chili pepper note laced with mild smokiness. It then gets into nectar sweetness midway as the dark roasted malts and molasses mingle with earthy chili pepper smokiness. Nice! I love the earthy smoked chili peppers here as the note is rich yet at just the right level to enjoy everything else that’s going on around it.
