Tripel Belgian-Style Ale Brewed with Rice and Thai Basil

Our Summer seasonal, Trade Winds Tripel is a Belgian-style Golden Ale with a Southeast Asian twist. Instead of using candi sugar (typical for such a beer), we use rice in the mash to lighten the body and increase the gravity, and spice with Thai Basil. The result is an aromatic, digestible and complex beer made for a lazy summer evening.

This was poured into a chalice.
The appearance was a nice hazy orange to cloudy brown color. The head maintains a gentle level of foamy thickness. Adequate lacing streams along the chalice.
The smell had some soft spice to bring an inviting light sweet Summery pear that came across fairly refreshing.
The taste was invitingly sweet and refreshing with a sticky sweet apples and pears. Light earthy/herbal quality of spice amplifies some refreshing qualities over my tongue. Light pear-like aftertaste leads into a nice finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a nice refreshing/sessionable quality rolling over my tongue.
Overall, nice refreshing Summery Tripel, not as yeasty as some tripels I’ve had, but this would make a great session in the Summer.

750 ml bottle. Pours a clear gold with full head. Aromas of bananas, apples, toasted rice and malts, and hint of copper. Flavors are similar with more pronounced copper; and a fruity, light bitter and spicy finish. Very nice.

600 yen for 120 ml, bottle at Hanshin Seed Event. Slightly opaque gold with a thick creamy off-white head. Yogurt, fruity, spicy Belgian yeast aroma. Wow, soft round spritzy carbonation & full mouthfeel. Tasty fruity, banana, yoghurt, a bit sour & tart. I liked it & was surprised to hear it was 8%!

Spain just lost and I’m drinking good beer. Viva! Haha. Pours cloudy orange with OK head and lacing. Coriander and some light basil. Finishes with light sweetness. Some booze. Well done and basil is just present enough to add an interesting twist to the style. Tap at Bruery event at Scion.

750 ml bottle into chalice, bottled on 3/13/2013. Pours slightly hazy bright gold color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big lemon zest, orange, peach, pear, pineapple, light apricot, black pepper, basil, bread, light honey, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity of fruity/earthy yeast with balanced spice and pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big lemon zest, orange, peach, pear, pineapple, light apricot, black pepper, basil, bread, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Moderate peppery yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon zest, orange, peach, pear, pineapple, light apricot, black pepper, basil, bread, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity of fruity yeast flavors with balanced spice and pale malts; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an absolutely outstanding tripel! Fantastic fruity/spicy yeast complexity with balanced spice and pale malt flavors; and extremely smooth and crisp to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

Keg at the Cannery Row Brewing Co, Monterey, 29/04/14. Lightly hazed golden with a moderate off white covering that stays for the show. Nose is lemon rind, spice, yeast esters, floral tones, straw, light booze. Taste comprises much the same, caramel, sweetness kept in check, citric peel. Medium + body, fine carbonation, lgiht booze and spice in the close. Decent enough tripel.

Big overcarbonated longlasting fizzy head. Aroma is slightly fresh fruity, citrus, light malts, hay, citrus peel, yeast, lychee, flowers, sugar. Taste is slightly dry, hay, yeast, citrus peel, light malts, flowers, alcohol, citrus, hints of tropical fruits. Medium bitterness, slightly dry mouthfeel, high carbonation. Nice enough.
