“first brew of the year”
Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun.

On draft at the Mad Fox Barley Wine Festival, Falls Church VA. Pours a fairly clear amber with an off white head. Sweet toffee nose. Some caramel followed by a massive hop infusion that nicely conceals the alcohol.

65 cl bottle @ O’Hara’s Freehouse. Rated on 12.05.2010
Aroma is somewhat sweet with fruity hops, caramel and hints of biscuits. Flavour is sweet with lots of caramel malt and fruity hops. Too sweet for me like American BWs usually are.

Tap at the Cask, Pimlico - 15/11/12. Murky chestnut brown with a thin tan head that retains well. Nose is toffee, dates, fudge, a little woodiness, light burnt tones. Taste follows nose, dark fruits, toffee, dark malt, hop flavours, touch of booze. Full bodied with soft fine carbonation and smooth on the palate. Overall a decent barley wine with the alcohol being well hidden. I think this would have been better a little warmer but I didn’t have time to hang around and wait for that ... next stop was EUSC !

Fra flaske på Cardinaltreff nov-10: heftige saker, intens smak og ettersmak som virkelig ga meg sansen for stilarten barley wine. Kan gjentas når som helst.

I’ve been sitting on this one for a little while, there’s no bottle dating, but I believe I put this away in 2009. Pours a mostly clear deep reddish orange with a good sized off white head that shows great retention and moderate lace. Smells of sweet sugar, caramel and dark fruit, cherries mostly with an earthy as well as an ethanol bite. The flavor is sweet with cherries and raisins with lots of sweet and dark sugars. I also catch a hint of roast or chocolate at the end of every sip. There is a fair amount of alcohol burn as well as some earthy and oxidized flavors. Medium to thick body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet almost syrupy mouthfeel. This is a nice flavorful barleywine but it seems to be in that in between stage where its not exactly fresh and not quite aged enough. I might have to put some of these away and see how they work with a bit more age.

Had this at ginger man bar in NYC. Paid $8. Served in a 12 ounce snifter. Very dark amber brown color. No head at all. It's been a long night. Hard to discern scents. Of course, ultra sweet. Loads of pepper and vanilla. Slight pineapple scent. Taste is excellent. Incredibly sweet very nice ultra bitter hop profile. This is very fresh so it's still a lot of big carbonation. I'm getting a slight tropical fruits. Huge gigantic malt backbone. 80% carbonation on the mouth swish. Heavy body. Ultra sweet finish.
