“first brew of the year”
Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun.

Flaske 0,65l. Gave fra Rune. Rødbrun. Medium luftig skum som varer en stund. Deilig plomme/sviskearoma. Smaken det samme godt integrert med en kraftig alkoholsødme. Smaken balanserer etter hvert og stabiliserer seg på tørket frukt & bær. Avslutter tørt. Bra - men vel søt.

Just a small glass of this strong ale poured from tap at Schouskjelleren. One rounded patch at the surface of a near-clear, very dark body. Rather faint smell of toffee and dried fruits. Perfumed taste of dried fruits like figs, hints of pumpkin followed by spiced hops. Long-lived ending with prominent bitterness and warming alcohol. Oily palate. Well bodied. Looking forward to have a bottle of this one as a late night sipper (Oslo, 26.09.2011),

A red copper ale with a thin lacing off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with dark fruits, light vinous character, alcohol warmth, OK. In mouth, sweet caramel malt with dark fruits, licorice, alcohol warmth, a bit thin. Bottle from 2011.

I’m pulling out the fine crystal for this one - because I can! It has a very light muddy-brown body with more carbonation than I would expect from a barley wine, and some very modest head. Soft aroma of caramel. Digital thermometre is reading a temperature of 9.6 celsius, higher than recommended, but also to me that seems quite cold already - this is a barley wine after all! Why would they demand a barley wine be served at such cold temperatures? The flavour at 9.6c, then, is a mix of heavy caramel and some barley hints. Modestly wet finish with a dry aftertaste a few seconds later. This is what I’d call a "mainstream" barley wine - though barley wines certainly aren’t main stream, this lacks the complexity and care of better ones I’ve tried. It is, however, still quite drinkable.

0.65l bottle. This one pours a cloudy red-brown body with a small sidesticking and bubbly light caramel head. The aroma has some notes of bready malts, nice dark caramel, you can sense that there are some grassy hops in here as well and there's hints of both licorice and dark fruits. It has a light sticky to oily mouthfeeling, soft to average carbonation and full to medium-bodied. Tastes nice and sweet with some caramel, calk, there's also something reminding me of red berries here. Red currants and ripe strawberries perhaps? Ends mild hopy, mild caramel-sweet with a hint of warming alcohol. Good stuff as usual from Southern Tier!
