Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun.

Bottle @ Pannuhuone, Kuopio. Originally rated on 19.2.2010. Excellent barley wine with a nice aroma. Sweet, but well balanced. Great finish.

Bottle, 22oz at Haandbryggeriets homebrew contest. It pours a hazy, amber body and a small, dark beige head. Lots of dried fruits, with caramel on the nose. Good hoppyness, slightly citrusy. Sweet and bitter in the mouth, sort of citrusy, with a touch of meaty umami. Fine bitterness bringing balace to the accounts. Full bodied and nicely carbonated. Long finish with pleasant bitterness. Although not a world class barley wine, it’s sure one to revisit. 110212

Sparkling mahogany, small beige head.Nose of molasses and sweet malt. Huge malt molasses profile, noticeable but restrained alcohol heat. Doesn’t have the harsh alcohol overtones most have had lately. Balanced and mellow. Good effort !!

Bottled from Bierkompass. Red, copper color with huge beige head. aroma strongly caramel, dark fruit, honey, dates, figs, raisins. Sweet brandy like finish. Very interesting complex beer.

65 cl bottle thanks to rlgk! On February 4, 2011Hazy copper color, small light brown head. Sweet, malty, dry, roasted scent. Sweet, malty, bitter, cream taste. Dry bitter aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel, dry medium high bitterness. Warming alcohol.

Hazy dark brown beer with a thin biscuit coloured head. Smooth barleywine - a little briney but packed full of smooth malt. Some aniseedy alcohol and some vaguely fruity hop. Nicely joined up.

Early 2008 bottle. Dark brown with orange and lace. Caramel, dark chocolate aroma, with fruits, grassy hops, gumballs. Spicy. Flavor is still quite hoppy for a 3 year old beer, with citrus and caramel and a nice acidy edge plus a slight candy sweetness. Alcohol is there but rather well hidden. Still well caronated, prickly. Very fresh seeming. Decent.

22 oz bottle. Pours hazy copper with an off-white head. Nice caramel aroma with honey and toasty biscuit and touches of citrusy hops. Flavor has the caramel with a bit of honey and biscuit, but also has kind of a stale quality to the grassy hops and something of a strong alcohol presence. I think maybe this bottle is a bit old, but with no date to be found on the bottle I can’t be sure. It does get better as it warms, though so it ends up with a decent enough rating.
