Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun.

22 oz. bottle, split with manuchampions, pours dark amber with a beige head. Aroma of brown sugar, caramel malt and molasses. Flavour of sweet dried fruits, caramel malts, brown sugar and a decent alcohol finish. Quite the treat this was - excellent.

650 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10.0%. Copper coloured beer, big to moderate off-white head. Lovely aroma of fruity and piney American hops, some sweetish malty notes too, but not too much. Rich flavour of copious amounts of American hops and sweet malts, nicely balanced. Some vinous notes, also resin, caramel, oak and dark dried fruits. Definitely one of the better barleywines I’ve had.

On tap at Blind Tiger VSK event. Nice pour with decent lacing. Taste is of bold flavors of apple, cinnamon, woody, spicy malt, raison, herbs. Kinda slick on the finish, I have certainly hit up some strong beers at this little event, good lord time to go.

Pours clear copper color with off white head. Caramel and molasses aroma with some faint hops. Sweet toffee flavor with some pine hops. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation.

Medium offwhite head. Deep reddish brown body. Syrupy raisiny malty aroma with toffee, marzipan, and alcohol notes. Dry-sweetish roasty nutty faintly smoky taste with peppery toffee notes. Mid-bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Dryish nutty roasty aftertaste with smoky resiny notes. Nice, dangerously drinkable, unusual. Very malt-dominated. (0.65l bottle, Fish and Beer, Copenhagen.)

Sample at Brew Kettle. Pours a hazy copper color with a medium foamy off-white head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malt, toffee and hops. Medium to full body with a moderately hoppy character that has some piney and grassy notes. Sweet caramel malt and sweet fruity notes as well. The finish is citrusy with a hoppy aftertaste. Solid Barley Wine overall.

Bottle. Pours a dark nearly clear mahogany with a medium tan head. Aroma is strong and full of sweet malts and grains with a slight undertone of alcohol. Flavor is similar and full of sweet malts and grains with a bit of an alcohol bit towards the finish.

Hazy deep ruby color, small white head. Intensive American hoppy malty and a bit sweet nose. Liquerish, slightly sweet but same time salty, licoricey palate. Some hops but much easier to drink than more hoppy American barley wines like Bigfoot. Bready aftertaste. Feels less alcoholic than 10%. Drinkability is very good in this brew.

Aroma: An aroma of over ripe oranges and wood, with some caramel and booze
Appearance: This one pours a hazy caramel-brown color with a creamy tan head and lots of lace
Flavor: Nice barley wine flavor, a nice hop presence to go along with the above average sweetness
Palate: Quite smooth and drinkable with a creamy mouthfeel and a medium-full body
Overall Impression: I was looking forward to this one, I've been holding onto it for about 5 months, but it was well worth the wait. Anyway, I really enjoyed this one, and liked how it was put together. Just a great tasting beer, on the sweet side for a barley wine, but it just really flows. I'd certainly recommend this one to anyone looking for a nice barley wine. It really just works.

Moderately strong and extremely hoppy aroma of grapefruit, honeycomb, and pineapple.Clear mahogany color, medium tan head, some lacing. Full body, not syrupy, alcohol present but tasteful. Strong initial flavor of rose hips, honeycomb, and triple sec,. A bit of oak at midpalate, ending in horehound. Great balance and transitions. Easy drinking and intense at the same time. I don’t know how the hell they do it. Masterfully done!
