XII was our third foray, in 2008, into barrel aging. Five components, four matured in spirits barrels and one not, were used in the blending of this beer: Parabola, Opal, Rufus, Saucerful of Secrets, and Union Jack. Cooperage used in its maturation included Rip Van Winkle, Heaven Hill Bourbon, Heaven Hill Brandy, Heaven Hill Rye, Old Fitzgerald wheat whiskey, and retired Firestone Union American medium toasted oak barrels. Aggressive and complex.

Bottled. A dark chestnut colored beer with a brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt adn caramel as well as lighter notes of alcohol and chocolate. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, alcohol, over ripe fruits, and prunes. The alcohol leaves a burn on the palate. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

From bottle, blind #17. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is dense overripe fruity, hard roasted malt and light spiced aroma. Dark fruity bourbon flavours. Smooth roasted and bourbon fruity flavoured into a smooth finish. Roasted and warming bourbon flavoured finish.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of bu11zeye. Pours a dark brown with a reddish hue and a creamy, beige head. Warm bourbon aroma. Medium body, roasted malt, lots of caramel, loads of bourbon and vanilla accents. Warming alcoholic finish. 120609

Bottle at home ... with Jan and charlotte ... black ... bubbly light tan head ... light roast malt nose ... big bold roast and deep fruits ... little coconut ... little woody ... nice and really quite rich ... but just a little boozzy and maybe just a bit too overpowering in it flavour .... grows on me with time... and it is much more drinkable than expected.

FRO Throwdown: Woody raisiny rum cake. Deep dark chocolate and cherries. Oaky, tannic, a touch of roast. Finish has touches of sherry and bourbon. Nice.

Bottle. Dark mahogony beer with a small tan head. Bourbon, malt, and vanilla aroma. Malt, caramel, and chocolate flavor with brandy and some oakiness. Fuller bodied. Alcohol noticeable - just a bit too much. Rich malt, brandy, and mollases lingers with some hops. Nice complexity.

Dark brown. Chewy, raisiny, rich nose. Rich, bourbony palate with lots of chocolate, wood, roast. This is fun stuff.

Very dark, cloudy brown. A little sugar. Palate is a little heavier than most. There is oak with vanilla, and considerable bourbon. Full flavor, but I am not into the bourbon in this one.

Bottle. Picture sent in to be uploaded. Had side by side with Firestone 10. Pours with a small light brown head and a near black body. Great lacing! Aroma of bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, maple, booze, leather, and tobacco. Aroma is a bit hot from alcohol, but the taste surprisingly isnt for such a young big beer. Taste is bourbon, wood, sweet with chocolate, not too hot at all, with some cookie, nut, molasses, smooth maple syrup and a light wood bitterness. Syrupy and mouthcoating with light carbonation. Warming. A very good beer, better than both 10 and 11 in my opinion!

Another supreme offering from teh king of beer tarvels, none other than tpd975. this beer is just a big wow. Jaw dropping goodness. Pours black with tan-white head. Aroma is loaded with bourbon and sweetness almost vanilla. Taste of bourbon, malty caramel-choclate filled with the nice oak barrel touch. The mouthfeel has an awesome lingering bourbon presence that make this beer a really exceptional brew. There is just not much to say about the beer, it is just near perfect goodness.
