XII was our third foray, in 2008, into barrel aging. Five components, four matured in spirits barrels and one not, were used in the blending of this beer: Parabola, Opal, Rufus, Saucerful of Secrets, and Union Jack. Cooperage used in its maturation included Rip Van Winkle, Heaven Hill Bourbon, Heaven Hill Brandy, Heaven Hill Rye, Old Fitzgerald wheat whiskey, and retired Firestone Union American medium toasted oak barrels. Aggressive and complex.

Bomber shared by Marcus. Very dark brown color with a fairly decent tan head. Aroma is mild, but intense, dark fruit. Alcohol is detectable. Fully body with mild carbonation. Flavor is fruity with a little coffee and chocolate, and some quad like malt. Starts smooth, and tends to harshen up. But with time it turns more mellow.

Damn, tpd975 ROCKS. He scored some of this tasty brew and shared some with us at the weekly tasting. Thanks Greg. Pours dark brown with brown edges and very little foam in the off white head. The aroma is full robust notes coming from barrel essence of oak, vanilla and booze to go along with hints of malts and caramel. Not even a big draw brings a load of heat. Understandable considering the huge ABV and young age. The taste is surprisingly smooth starting with malt sweetness, caramel and solid oak. It then turns toward vanilla, bourbon and molasses. Very nice stuff. I would love to try it with a couple of years of age. From my point of view the 11 was better with more levels of tasty complexity. Both the 11 and 12 I find far better than the 10.

Bomber shared by Odeed; Nose of chocolate covered plums, oaky vanilla, and some light alcohol; black with a small, quick disappating, tan head; flavor has very light bitterness, light alcoholwarmth, chocolate, and some dark fruitiness. 11/20/11 Bomber form my cellar. Only four of these left after this rerate. Nose is oaky vanilla up front, chocolate, and prunes. Hazy very dark brown with a small beige head. Flavor is big on toffee and prunes, musty oak, vanilla, and hints of bourbon. 8/4/9/4/17 4.2
