A popular, old-fashioned British brew that unfortunately has become a rarity these days, Brown Porter owes its dark hue and name to the use of brown malts, which lend color but also distinctive, delicate notes of coffee and cocoa. Thanks also to its low alcohol content, it’s surprisingly easy to drink for a dark beer.

Bottle from HavnensVin&Tobak (two weeks past BBE date). Pours opaque brownish black with huge brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, caramel, fudge, rye bread, coffee with cream, milk chocolate and hints of mint. Taste is faint to light sweet, medium bitter and light to medium acidic. Body is watery with light carbonation. Finish is long and mostly bitter and sour with notes of sour malt, acidic coffee, sour cherry, redcurrant and chocolate. Strange but not unpleasant. Perhaps it was better fresh?

Pours dark brown with hints of light passing through the liquid; possibly hazy. A low sized off-white head disappears very quickly, no lacing to speak of. Good enough intensity in the aroma, scarce depth though. Caramel, light roasted malts, milk coffee. Taste is medium sweet and low to medium in bitterness, overall the beer is surely sweeter than the average porter. Taste notes follow the aroma, with a semi-sweet aftertaste. As for smell, reasonably intense (expecially for the low abv) but not at all deep. Light bodied with average carbonation, possibly a bit higher in carbonation than average per style, which makes up for the very light body. The beer still feels overall easy and smooth. This was surely an easy drinker and overall fully acceptable beer, but i felt like it seriously lacked character.

On tap at HaandFest. A small beige head forms over a brown body. The aroma is heavily roasted, with coffee and a whiff of charcoal. It's very thin on the palate, with a pleasant carbonation. Roasted kind of bitterness, roasted malts and coffee in the flavor. Lasting roasted and burnt finish. Too thin and heavily roasted this one I think, but it's a lot of beer at a low ABV, that's for sure. 170527
