Tasting notes and ingredients: This is a mild ale style beer brewed with East Anglian pale ale and Crystal malted barley and Boadicea hops. It’s dark red/brown in colour with an aroma of caramel and nutty chocolate. The toffee and chocolate also come through on the palate along with hints of red fruits, all balanced by a smooth bitterness. A traditional speciality winter warmer with flavours of fruit, malt, roast grain, and a hint of caramel.

What’s the story?: Old Ale is based on one of Adnams’ oldest beer recipes which dates back to 1890. It was crowned Champion Beer of East Anglia 2013 by CAMRA.

Rocky off white head left a creamy cover on a deep mahogany coloured body. Malt, sources & raisin aroma. Medium bodied, smooth with lighter clean back. Malt, liquorice, raisin & brown sugar tastes with a tangy fruity finish. Lovely Ale.

Bottle online from Beers Of Europe. Pours almost black with a medium sized creamy off-white head. Very faint aromas of dark fruits some caramel and chocolate. Taste has milk chocolate, caramel and some more dark fruits. Very malty with no bitterness. Sweetish finish. Medium body, very low carbonation and smooth oily mouthfeel. Not that great if I’m honest. Has a decent nice smooth mouthfeel but that’s about it.

Cask at Standing Order, Derby. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small cream head and good lacing. Some vague hints of chocolate in the aroma. In the mouth it has a creamy texture with chocolate to the fore on a caramel base. Traces of darks fruits and liquorice too. Some bitterness in the finish. This is nice – punches well above its ABV.

Underlying beer is nice and smooth and creamy, a bit of oxidation though. But the mild roast is nice. GBBF Winter

Cask at Waterloo Tap. Vague caramel and veg aroma. Dark cola brown. Frothy beige head. Light sweet. Some low key bitterness on the periphery. Malty chocolate and fruit. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Average carbonation. Long finish. Nice enough if a couple of pints could get sickly.
