(Draught at Brydens, Sep 16 2013) Pours a hazy orangish gold with a dense white head and a carpet of lace. Aroma is very intense, tart citrus and pit-fruit/red fruit, quite wine-like. Some wood, slight peppery notes. No real rye, a little funky but at a yeasty rind level. Juicy character to the palate, sweet/tart, fruity, vinous - similar fruits to the aroma with a bit of berry character towards the finish. Particularly from mid-palate there is a slightly woody, peppery note, becomes more tart/astringent towards the finish. Slight funky character from the barrel in the later stages, light hop/grain bitterness, pepper on the finish as well. Body is medium but carb effervescent, slight cling on the palate, touch of booze. Barrel really owns the rye and the peppercorn here. Reminds me a little of low-sweetness sangria! Itβs tasty though, much more tart than expected but I like cab franc and I like this.
