Ever since the Viking era, the Christmas beer tradition has been strong in Norway. As stated in the 'Gulatingsloven' (a regional law text valid until 1274), every farmer was bound by the law to brew beer for Christmas and christen it according to the new faith, otherwise running the risk of losing his assets to the king and bishop. The Christmas beer was normally brewed from the best grain of the season and would be strong with a rich malt flavour. Dahls Christmas Brew is a modern version of the traditional Norwegian Christmas beer.

Dahls Christmas Brew is a Vienna type beer with an amber colour. The aroma is slightly fruity with notes of banana, freshly based bread and caramel. This beer is medium-bodied with a taste of toasted malt and sweet caramel.

50cl can from Rema. Pours deep amber with an off-white head. Caramelly aroma with malt and just a tiny hint of fruits and roasted malt. Sweet and caramelly like carbonated caramel water with alcohol. Some bitterness in the finish is detectable, but this is not my kind of beer. I tried it before, but this time I will try to remember not to try it again. Drinkable, but sweet and boring and there are far better alternatives in my opinion.

500 ml can, from Vaaland, Bryne. ABV is 4.5%. Copper coloured beer, moderate off-white head. The aroma has some caramel and toffee. Light bodied. The flavour has caramel (without being overly sweet), a hint of spices and a dusty finish. Drinkable, but not remarkable.

500ml can from Ølbutikken in Tromsdalen. Low, disappearing, off-white head. Shiny, dark amber body. Weak smell of sweet grain. The taste is also grainy with a few hints of caramel sweetness and a momentary note of tart fruits. Mouth-filling carbonation. Very typical for this kind of Norwegian juleøl [relaxing after Christmas preparation at home in Tromsø, 22.12.2008].

Had this at the European Beer Festival, Kobenhaven 13-09-08 Cheer for FatPhil? for bringing this along. Poured classic amber with a thin white head, its ok but nothing special, quite a simple beer, some seasonal nods.
