Back Road Stout used to be just a winter seasonal brew when it first was introduced back in 1996. Since then popular demand has made it into an all year affair. The ‘oatmeal’ in the name is due to the 5% oatmeal in the grist of this brew. Oats give this beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied & smooth stouts, this beer is for you!

Bottle. A dark brown beer with a small, tan head. Chocolate, roasted malt and some coffee in the aroma. A bit one-dimentional maybe, but quite nice. The flavor has beef-stock, coffee, chocolate, a little touch of butterscotch and a coffee bitter finish. Medium body, quite dry, yet with a sweetish feeling. Sweetness, coffee and some butterscotch as well, in the finish. A quite nice one, but nothing more. Easy to drink, but maybe a bit dry for an oatmeal stout. (080822)

12 fl oz bottle. Pours dark brown to black with fully diminished tan head. Almost smooth mouthfeel. Chocolate and roasted malt aroma, quite dark and slight roasted. Roasted malt base flavour with a smooth chocolate note and a reappearing roasted malt flavour showing a distinct acidity into the finish. Lingering chocolate malty finish.

Aromas of chocolate, coffee and dark toasted malt. Very dark brown color with a tan head that just ringed. Medium to full bodied with creamy carbonation. First flavors are something like coffee and toasted malt. Then another, sweet, flavor shows up that might reflect the lager aspects. Not necessarily bad, but it tends to reinforce that this is not a standard stout. Drinkable, but not so pleasant as many outmeal stouts. Finish is sort of coffee and dark malts with some bitter, but not necessarily as much as would be appropriate. Maybe it’s just too sweet for my tastes.

A stout-lager they say? This is a decent beer. Basically a lightly carbonated oatmeal/chocolate/coffee stout. Just a little grit, but it is fairly thick and has a nice brown head. Prominent chocolate aroma and choco-coffee flavor.

This beer came to me from my beer club. I am not otherwise familiar with this brewer. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized very dark brown head. The aroma is sweet and roasty with sweet chocolate and coffee elements. The flavor is moderately sweet, roasty, toasty and has a light chocolate element and a hint of coffee. There is a moderate floral hop presence. The finish is roasty and chocolaty. The mouthfeel is moderately thick.

Pour is a very black with a tan head. Aroma is faint whifs of chocolate and malts. Flavor is bitter coffee with a chocolate quality. Finishes bland and watery. Looks good and smells good but in the end its just not thick enough to be a stout.

Acquired via trade. Pours a very dark brown color that lets a little light through. Thin beige head that dissipated rapidly. Not much lacing until further down the glass. The aroma consists mainly of coffee as well as a touch of malt. Medium-bodied with a milky texture. Roasted coffee, malt and a touch of tart fruit in the flavor. The finish is smooth with a lightly bitter character. Nothing too exciting going on here, just a run-of-the-mill Oatmeal Stout you can find anywhere.

Bottle. I emailed the brewery and they suggested the off taste came from the fact that I had an 8-month old bottle; since they don’t pasteurize their beer, that’s past its prime. I will definietly buy more fresh beer and revise my rating at a future date. Starts out really nice. Beautiful roast coffee smell when opened. Pours a deep black body under a thin tan head. Taste is very roasty, too, but I also get the big sour orange taste other raters mentioned, followed by a punch of Coca-cola. Taste does settle out to a nice creamy oatmeal stout, but the sour cola gets in the way. How could they got such a taste with a lager yeast?
