Back Road Stout used to be just a winter seasonal brew when it first was introduced back in 1996. Since then popular demand has made it into an all year affair. The ‘oatmeal’ in the name is due to the 5% oatmeal in the grist of this brew. Oats give this beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied & smooth stouts, this beer is for you!

Bottle as Back Road Stout. Pours black with brown head. Nose and taste of toasted oats, coconut, roasted chocolate malt and dark cocoa. Light peat finish. Medium body.

12 ounce bottle from pepsican. Thanks! Back Road Stout label. Lots of yeast is left in the bottle. Pours an opaque black color with a thin fizzy head that quickly fades. The taste is rich roasted malts, oatmeal, caramel, coffee and bitter hops. Aroma of slightly acrid roasted malts. Medium bodied with high carbonation. Decent.

12 oz bottle from pepsican labeled Millstream Back Road Stout. Nose is bitter chocolate, oats, roasty notes, with hints of coffee. Black with a medium cinnamon tan head. Flavor is chcolate, oatmeal mush, and caramel.

Sampled at the DC Ratebeer Gathering. Pours a watery, translucent dark brown with zero head. Nose of coffee, processed chocolate, toasted bread, brown sugar. Flavor is sweet, brown sugar, light cola, dark bread. Medium bodied, dry finish.

Received in trade from tedpeer, thanks for the opportunity. Pours a solid black with a thin mocha head that dissipates quickly. Smells of roast, chocolate, and licorice. Taste is quite roasty, some bitterness in the middle and a lingering coffee roast in the finish. Smooth creamy mouthfeel. Medium body. Ample carbonation. This is a great little stout. Simple for what it is, but highly sessionable. I enjoyed this one immensely. On a side note, the bottle claims that this is a lager, I wonder if that is true.

12oz bottle, labeled Back Road Stout. Opaque brownish-black with a thick beige head. Malty, oatmeal, chocolate milkshake aroma. Very sweet stuff, does the style justice. Hmm..stylistically this is a mystery...if it used lager yeast wouldn’t that make it a Dunkel? It certainly fits that mold, with maybe some added roasty chocolate tones. Sweet and creamy, quite sugary but oh so nice. Well done.

Bottle. Chocolate, oatmeal malt, fresh hay, and ash aroma. Black-brown color with giant brown head. Slightly sweet chocolate oat malt, lactic acid and moderately bitter fresh hay flavor. Okay body. Decent but strong lactic acid.

Bottled. A dark red - almost brown beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of sweet malt and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and lots of caramel, almost caramel soup, making it a bit cloying towards the finish. The body is a bit light. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of pepsican. Pours an opaque dark brown with an orange hue and a small light brown head. Sweetish aroma of hard roasted malt. Quite full-bodied for such a low ABV beer with plenty of sweetish roasted malts a whiff of coffee and an edge of dried fruits. Has a light malt bitterness in the finish. 220808
