Back Road Stout used to be just a winter seasonal brew when it first was introduced back in 1996. Since then popular demand has made it into an all year affair. The ‘oatmeal’ in the name is due to the 5% oatmeal in the grist of this brew. Oats give this beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied & smooth stouts, this beer is for you!

12 oz bottle rich dark brown pour. Lots of fairly sweet chocolate in the aromas and flavors. Smooth and lost of soft toasted malts.

Bottle: Black, with a large, dark tan head. Chocolate, raisin-oatmeal aroma. Taste is mildly tangy....chocolate malt, oats.... A little too lactic. Not bad.

Draft at Iowa Taproom, De Monies. 3-16-2016,from notes. Raven feather black color, no head when it arrived at the table. The aroma is bitter chocolate, some grain and chocolate notes. The flavor is bitter chocolate, weak roast and a bit of sugar. Nice dry finish with a somewhat smooth mouthfeel. This breweries standard stout offering. Really weak in the body category. Not bad just very ordinary.

HuskerTan, jbuskirk and I missed out on Millstream beers around Omaha, so it was a nice surprise to see them at the Wohlner’s attached to my hotel. Bottle. Clear deep brown color, tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate and light coffee. Taste has light roast and cocoa. OK.

Bottle. A- Black licorice, tobacco, coffee, roasty, cocoa. A- Black color, dark liquid, brown head. T- Roasty, cocoa, anise, tobacco, coffee, malty. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- This was a pleasant surprise. Didn’t expect much but got a lot. Nice rich and deep flavors with anise and tobacco seeming to come through the most on the nose and a complex taste. Enjoyed this one well enough.

12 oz bottle purchased as a single at Beer Crazy in Urbandale, Iowa. The pour is a black brown with a khaki head that falls fast. The aroma is a soft roast. The taste is char roast, the oatmeal and a clean dry mineral finish. The palate is medium to heavy bodied with soft carbonation and the clean finish. Solid Stout.
