Dark, brownish beer with a decent head and a slight whiff of toasty malt. Flavour has a bit of fruit, a bit of caramel and a decent dry, roasted edge to it for balance. It doesn’t do anything special but given the style and strength there’s not a lot wrong with it either.

Bottle on sale from Yamaya 170yen(so near the best by date) Ah it is a schwarzbier not a stout, that makes more sense then... still it poured a nice cola brown with a thick quickly dissipating beige head. The nose is roasty sweet malts, barley and light coffee. An effervescent carbonation reminiscent of sparkling water like Perrier on a fairly thin body. The taste is actually pretty good a well balanced mix of roasted malts, a bit of sweetness and some coffee. Not bad. Knowing it is a schwarzbier I’d say it’s quite true to style and among the nicer ones I’ve had lately... though actually it isn’t a style I seek out.
